Sigma 12-24mm Finally some samples and a minireview

Every week it seems there is a new post asking foir ANYTHING on this lens...

welll Fred Miranda finally has a review here;

Look at the thread "Sigma 12-24" a little longer down the list. I pointed out this review and some others to look at earlier tonight. I'm real confused by this though. I see the guy at fredmiranda giving it quite an "ok" review, while the one over at photographyreview.com totally slaughters it :/ But the pics look good though. Try my "google-trick" of searching for reviews. I found several, more galleries too. To me the pics doesn't look to bad. Now it's either this or the 17-40mm. I really wan't my first L, but I also _really_ wan't a sub-20mm lens =) (taken the 1.6x-whatnot-factor in account)

Interesting. This review states that the filter size is 82mm. But according to the Sigma site this lens uses small gel filters at the back of the lens.

Anybody know which it is ?

Reason I ask is that I've been waiting for a wider lens than my Sigma 17-35mm for landscape work but not being able to fit my Cokin filter system to the 12-24 put me off.

But if it does indeed use a 82mm filter thread I'm laughing and I'm off to exchange my 17-35 for the 12-24.

It could be both... :)

The Sigma 15-30 is an example,. it is listed as only taking rear gelitin filters,.. there are no threads for a front filter on the built in lens hood....

...BUT .. the plastic ring thing that must be attached to mount the lens cap DOES have filter threads,. and thus a filter CAN be installed,. but it will Vignette at the corners with a 35mm film plane. I unsderstand though that it will not Vignette on a 10D/D60/300D.

I'm guessing the 12-24mm may be similar?

Thanks CDS, I didn't know that about the 15-30.

I think the best bet is to head into town at the weekend and talk to "my man" in the shop and get him to get one in for me to look at.

I simply cannot go to a 12-24 if I can't front mount filters. I would be lost without my ND grads :)

OK, I wouldn't but would need more post-processing...

I've got one o order and I also like using ND Grads.
If I can't get them to fit, I will probably make up a bracket similar to the way that the Cokin Digital Series flters fit to the tripod mount.
