I wasn't sure whether these fell Nature or Sports, sooo...posting in both...

My second outing shooting the Draft Horse and Mule show this time at the Frederick Fair in Maryland yesterday. Very foggy when I got there and then the sun burned it off and was nearly blinding. Luckily I learned from the first time shooting these guys and brought my B&W Circular Polarizer...man is that thing worth every penny! Fantastic turnout and some breathtakingly beautiful horses. Warning...66 shots. Please give me comments and feedback.

Linda... they look really nice. My only tweak would be when you showcasing some of the larger horses and trying to convey their size, shot from a little lower to help emphasize just how big some of these animals are. Other then that ... good thinking on the Polarizer.

Thanks much Mark...Some of them are HUGE! I will try that next time. I actually shot some of the carriages from the judges stand to capture the drivers more than just the horses...I have hundreds of shots from there and inside the ring. The OP really liked the idea of shooting the driver's from that angle, she had never considered it before.

I'm interested to hear about your experiences with this - can you elaborate a bit?

I loved the shot of all the bums lined up showing their tails - great perspective.

Hey thanks! This event was the Great Frederick Maryland County Fair and here is a link to the show specs: http://www.thegreatfrederickfair.com/2006/Files/PDFs/HorseandMule.pdf

It was my second time shooting (assisting the OP) this kind of show. I think they are mostly judged on conformation and movement. There are driver classes and under saddle, and horse pulls as well. I didn't get a chance to shoot the horse pulls or under saddle this time. Although I prefer to shoot eventing more, I really love these big guys and count it a totally enjoyable day shooting them. I like your website and love your pictures. I can see why you are published!

Thanks for your kind comments about my website. I had a look at yours too and love your shots, esp the grey in the grackle noseband. Not the prettiest horse but I just like the angle and the expression on his face.

Can you tell me about your experience with the polariser?

I am glad you like my site...many kudo's to Smuggy for making it easy for me to post. Not sure which horse you are referring too, could you give me the link?

I use the polarizer on all the Pooch Plunge shots, but left the lens hood on and I don't think you are supposed to do that, so some of them looked a little dark to me, but terrific on reducing water glare. Those shots were from 11 -1 very sunny day.

I used it Sunday at the Frederick Fair after the fog burned off and the Brutally bright sun came out. I think it was terrific on the horses. You can compare the Howard County shots to the Frederick and immediately see a difference. That B&W circ polar is pricey...really worth it IMHO.
