I'm trying to use linearsharpen but I'm having problems converting raw files to linear tiffs.

Just what is a linear tiff and does 16 bit automatically make it linear.

I'm using Canon's zoombrowser and it does not have an option to convert to "linear" tiff.

Do I need different software for raw conversion?

Thanks

I can't answer the Canon software issue because from the start I used BreezeBrowser http://www.breezesys.co.uk/BreezeBrowser/index.html
and have had linear tiff conversion available.

You are correct that 16 bit tiff is not linear. Also, a linear tiff will need a linear action or it will just be a muddy tiff.

Many here use BreezeBrowser to convert raw to linear tiff, and PhotoShop v6 with Pekka's LinearSharpen or LinearAction and/or Fred Miranda's PhotoShop action to complete the equation.

In short, getting a linear tiff is easy. The rest is a challenge that has been well met on this forum but will take several more steps to completion and it may not be inexpensive if you don't have PhotoShop v6 already.

Hope this helps.

breezebrowzer very nice, easy to use, easy to convert to linear tiff.

Very nice results with the linearsharpen. Now I know why the non-linear tiffs come out so washed. Linear tiffs start out much darker, therefore the need to brighten.

Thanks for the information. This forum may make a photographer out of me yet

Out of us both, Gerry!

From my limited understanding of this, linear is the absolute_as_the_sensor_saw_it conversion. The important factor is, "Shoot RAW". In a year we may have options for our old .crw files that will blow us away, and it may not involve linear at all.

Glad this worked out; I was thinking about this all week-end and am super thankful you posted back!:)
