Challenge #37 - Self Portrait

I thought this one would be fun. Not a single one of us will have a problem finding a subject :). The rule is that you have to personally press the shutter button. It may take some experimentation, but that's the nice thing about digital. Be creative in how you accomplish the task. Pay attention to your backgrounds, get a nice exposure, and don't forget about composition. You just may come up with something you would be proud to hang on your wall.

I know some of you may have a problem with posting your image on the web. I hope that doesn't deter people - you can always delete it after the contest is over.

[The rule is that you have to personally press the shutter button.

I wanted to clarify the rule since I have been asked a couple times about it. What I am trying to avoid is somebody else taking a picture of you with your camera. Personally, I wouldn't call that a self portrait - although I imagine that can be open to debate (not in this thread please). In order to take the shot yourself, the best way I can see is using the self timer. Of course, there are other ways to take self portraits that are creative and don't involve the timer. But I would rather not spell it out. Be creative and figure out a good way to do it.

BTW, if there are any more questions, please PM me. I would rather not clutter the thread with questions. If anything needs to be clarified further, I will update in this post.

Thanks,
Stefan

Shot with a Canon a620 in B&W.

Settings : manual mode, ISO 50, Aperature F3.5, Shutter speed 1/80 secs, Flash fired

Notes : I covered the a620 flash with a piece of cardboard and used a slave flash (diffused using tissue) as my light source.
The flash from the a620 triggers the slave flash to fire which i am holding with my left hand.

I took this over the weekend. My friends and I just got done eating lunch, and came out to my car, and I had a flat tire! My friend was changing my tire, so I figured I'd take a quick picture of myself!
I edited it w/ PSE4, using the "HOLLYWOOD" effect w/ VirtualPhotographer.

Tried to upload 200k pic as directed but there seems to be a 100k limit

The way the rules are written are a bit confusing. It was just explained to me today that any upload, whether from your computer or a URL is limited to 100k and an embedded image using the [img] tag will allow a 200k file. I believe this is correct.

This was taken on June 9th, 2005 with my A95 using the 10 sec timer. There are numerous boulders up there that are perfect for putting a camera on... :D

I don't have the time to do a big write up on everyone's photo. But in general, I will say that I enjoyed hosting this one and I could tell that everybody put some thought into it. Lots of very creative ideas, along with more traditional poses. In the end, I started liking the more traditional ones better. So, here you go:

1st Place - Aray of Art with "Black & White Me" - I like the soft effect and the composition and exposure is just right. I like the catch light in your eyes and lips and I think your pose is very good. You seem to pop out of my monitor.

2nd Place - Transit with "untitled" If I were being real picky , I guess this photo wouldn't count because the rules do state that there is supposed to be a title. But I felt the shot was so good that I decided that it was worth breaking the rules. I like the black in front and behind the profile. I like the lighting. I like the detail in the face. I like the "concentrated" look that you have.

3rd Place - Edd S with "Morning Refections". The first thing that struck me was the colors and lighting. Then the composition. A good example of a thoughtful pose.

So, it looks like I felt the best ones were the more traditional shots, but ones that had a little extra creativity to go along with it.
