Purely a hobby, a money stealing, time robbing, time intensive, high maintenance mistress of a hobby.
wouldn't give up it up for an instant....

I put "other", because I don't work for a photography "company"; I work for a guitar company.
I'm more than a hobbiest, though, as I do charge for gigs...

Where is the part-time money-producing photographer, part-time hobbyist photographer category? I'd bet that a LOT of the folks in the forums here fit that mold - a "real" job full time with photography on the side as a paying hobby - the income paying for some of the toys to have fun with but probably not putting steaks on the table. That's my category, but I didn't feel that I could justify clicking a choice above.

I'm definitely an other. It's a hobby, that sometime makes money. I also work as a geologist for an engineering company. However as I'm a decent photographer I'm also used as the office photographer when they want photos of sites, projects, events, people, etc. I don't get any special rate for doing that, just my standard hourly rate.
So, hobbyist (80% of the time) and photographer for a non-photography company (20% of the time).

I have a day job and work for a sports conference when I can..... other then that - a hobbiest just trying to get better and not wanting to turn it into a real job so I can keep enjoying it.

I see it as 'cheaper than the shrink' ;) The last bill was $160 for a ST-E2, I betcha the shrink charges more and is less fun
I'm a hobbyist today who really enjoys shooting, but I also see it as a backup-of-last-resort job. If my industry collapses tomorrow (well, about as likely as the world coming to an end, but you never know in today's world.. world ending, too) and I had to change careers (and I pray that never happens), push come to shove, I might be able to eke out a living with the skills I've learned. I aim to be good enough to do that, although it's nice to learn when there's no pressure on you as a hobbyist.
I really wonder about the folks who saw lifetime employment as a right. Unfortunately, my generation and those to come will no longer have this priviledge. One hopes it will never happen but one must plan either way. (I've also learned that if I have a countermeasure ready to go, the contingency will never happen. If I DON'T have a countermeasure.. I can expect to be in for a heck of a ride!)

Hobbyist with a purpose... My kids play soccer and I enjoy seeing good pictures of them playing. Up until this fall I was always lucky enough (or maybe unlucky enough:confused: ) to have other parents who were good photographers with decent equipment taking pictures of their kids. I always got a good dozen or more photos each season from them.
This year however, my youngest is on a team with no parents who regularly bring their camera, and my oldest is in the same boat. So I had two excuses to get a decent camera and now I get a dozen or so shots from every game! (And now, I am the dad who does the emailing of photos of other people's kids every Monday night!)

Well it is a hobby but I do shoot some photos for work that we use in our newspaper ads. So I voted Hobbist to be accurate.
