I am living and teaching in China and having trouble with charging batteries for my canon sd 400. They seem to charge, but quickly lose their power. Is this because of the electrical here? what to do? I purchased new batteries and a local charger, but the problem continues.

Mains power shouldn't affect how long your batteries can hold a charge. If the charger shows the batteries have a full charge, they should have a full charge. Could you define "quickly"? What are your "sleep" settings for the camera? LCD Review settings?

Jon..thank you..Formerly, I could take about 140 shots of general type, partly flash,...now about 20 shots and the camera says "change battery pack". The charger seems to show green when the battery is placed in it to be charged...I have a new charger and batteries and the same occurs. I do not understand your questions as my state of skills is weak....when not actually using the camera it is turned off. It has been suggested the contacts on the camera need cleaned...any ideas appreciated. jack
