Funny you bring this up. I was just yesterday looking at these in the B&H catalog. I have no actual hands on experience with these, but think this device would come in real handy for someone that shoots high volumes of photos per event, and would like to have one myself.

This one is from Delkin, but I think I have seen it also under other brand names. B&H have a variety of similar products as well as this one. There are also a number of reviews, one I think at photo.net and maybe dpreview. I want one for travel, but have yet to see one that fills my bill.

Don't know about the cost of this one but the Image Tank X-Drive II suppots 6 card formats and can be bought with any 2.5" hard drive. A 20GB unit runs about $200; 40GB about $240.

It doesn't have a image LCD but does have a status LCD. Seem to be very popular.

Here's an example:

Yeah the Image Tank also has USB 2.0 which is significantly faster than the interface on the Delkin.

The one thing missing is a view of the image with the Image Tank.

I would ask them if it supports canon raw.
It mentions raw format but not canon raw.

Look at the other pages in the site.

It says the current firmware supports the following

- Canon D30, D60 RAW format
- Canon PowerShot G1, G2 RAW format
- Canon PowerShot S30, S40 RAW format

I don't see 10D or DRebel there....:(

I have the Image Tank G-2, 20gb, and it supports any format since it's nothing but a portable hard drive. You download the images from the Tank to the PC hard drive and process them using your conversion software.

All image tanks support all kinds of file formats and yllow you to download any kind of data on your smartmedia.

It's just that some of them offer you the possibility to REVIEW them on a screen - and that's where the RAW support icks in.

It's just that some of them offer you the possibility to REVIEW them on a screen - and that's where the RAW support kicks in. For many potential buyers, the Canon RAW support is definitely an additional motivation to go for that product.

I have the 30gig version of the Delkin Picture Pad and with the latest firmware I can view D60 and 10D RAW images with no problem.

I am darn glad I got it as the screen allows for file transfers from the device back to a CF card (so I can save the really good shots in two locations).

I highly recommend the Picture Pad.

Almost forgot, get the USB2.0 or firewire attachment, comes in real handy when downloading 2-week vacations 8)

The one negative is battery life, it never seems like it is enough (about 8 256MB CF cards or 3 1GB CF cards), but I have gotten the AA battery power pack for the picture pad and that has worked great to suppliment the internal battery.

Thanks for the information that you like the product. I am confused about your statement in regards to the CF cards. Do you mean the batteries last for 8 (256) fully loaded cards are downloaded. If this is true, I will be in heaven. Can you elaborate. Please

Clarification as to battery life.

The internal battery will let me download about Eight full 256Meg CF cards before it runs out of power.

Or at least it used to, it is down to about 5 CF card downloads after a full charge these days. I have had mine for 15 months so far, so it is probably time for me to get a replacement battery, but since I usually use the AA battery back, which tends to need a new set of AA Batteries after about 10gig of downloads using slightly used AA batteries. (mix of 256MB, 1GB CF cards and the occasional 340MB microdrive download).

Additional note on battery life, displaying pictures will significantly shorten the battery charge if not plugged in at the time. jpegs are not too bad, but RAW images take about a full minute to display, but again the battery pack makes a huge difference as I can usually find AA batteries all over the place.

Some other notes: The Delkin Picture Pad is pretty sturdy and I have been able to write to it, while moving around with no problem. Nixvue is the other brand name for the same device. Delkin's are shiny black, Nixvue's are silver finished. There is some difference in price and support and I recommend getting the unit from Delkin as they seem to do a better job of upgrading firmwear to new cameras then Nixvue.

Hope that helped,
