I was lucky enough to see lava 3 times during my trip to Hawaii. The pictures are a bit grainy, due to my S1 IS shooting at a high ISO. Overall though, it was one of the better cameras out on the flow for capturing this.

Nice... how far away from this were you to shoot it? That would have been really impressive to see up close (or reasonably close, anyway...)

This one is probably around 30 yards off. It was a small flow that broke out and into the ocean (the steam you see glowing) so we got pretty close. This was probably on full zoom for the S1.
The larger ocean entry was around a half mile off, behind the roped off area, a lot more steam there, and overall, poorer shots. Less detail. On this small flow we actually cooked hot dogs on it, and took samples before it reached the ocean. Its pretty hot though!

Great shots!
I was just in Hawaii last month, when the Campout flow finally made it to the water... it is now robbing the bigger flow that was feeding the lava bench (the one behind the ropes) at Lae 'apuki. Is it safe to assume that this is the Campout flow, in your images? Getting that close had to be an awesome experience!

Excellent shots! I went to see the lava in January and did not see anything this impressive or this close!

Superb, and so lucky to see lava! That's the disappointment I have had in two trips to the Big Island in 10 years.
