is it me, or is the 30D really really loud?
well... i was on my 3rd glass of wine, but that clicky/shutter noise just seemed really obtrusive.
i also have a 300D which seems much more quiet.
any reason for this? anyone else notice this?

Yeah ive noticed my 350D is alot quieter than my friends 30D :)

I would guess the reason has something to do with the shutter being rated to 100,000 cycles...

the 30d is 5fps as opposed to 3fps of the 350/300d. this means the mirror has to move faster to get out the way of the shutter and not obscure the shot. therefore it makes more noise:)

My XT is quieter than my 30D but I'd still much rather use the 30D. I can't say for sure why the difference is so prevalent but I've gotten used to it. It doesn't bother me, and never really did.

It's louder in one shot and 3FPS mode too. The XT sorta has a hiss type sound...like scissors. The 30D is more of a clack.

yeah but i guess the mirror still moves at the same speed as it still has to accomodate 5fps, i think it would be too much to try and get canon to design a variable speed mirror! would be nice if canon improved their soundproofing though... my friend has a nikon D50 and its much quieter, useful for candids and things...

Yeah I may be used to the sound but I wouldn't complain if they made it quieter.

They allready have! The 30D has a 3fps mode or 5fps mode - one of the new features introduced in the upgrade from 20D. This is to address the noise issue. (Canons words , not mine)

The XT sorta has a hiss type sound...like scissors. The 30D is more of a clack. That's a really good way of putting it. I have to say though, I really like the definitive CLACK that you get with the 30D shutter. Mind you, I mostly shoot cars, and they aren't as skittish as, say... wildlife. ;)
Maybe I should be grateful I have the quieter 350XT and leave it at that. To be perfectly honest, I love the shutter noise of my AE-1 most.. probably one of the reasons I still use it.
...Yes, I am that superficial. Resolution? Speed? Pfffft. Show me what the shutter sounds like, then we'll talk business!

Pretty soon, I expect someone will join and ask that old question, "How do I turn off the shutter sound on my new (400D, 30D)?"
Anyway, I haven't heard the shutter noise on the 30D, but I know the 20D is the loudest of all my cameras (and that includes the 5D and 1DMKIIN with their larger mirrors and shutters). I wonder it there is something about the size/design of the camera that makes the mirrorbox resonate with the shutter so the sound is amplified?

I thought my 30D was quieter than my XT, but that's truly so not even close to being a concern. I mean, I bought a DSLR and I've shot film SLR's, why would I complain about frickin' shutter noise?

The smaller mirrors means that they carry less inertia, and this means that the mirror needs more assistance on it's return. Canon uses an electro-magnetic mirror return system that "forces" the mirror back into place, hence the louder slap on bodies that have high FPS. Larger mirrors require less force to return.

Just LOVE it. I shoot horses and they perk up their ears and look toward the sound. Perfect pose = Money shot.

Larger mirrors require less force to return.
This seems a little counter-intuitive - surely something with more mass would require more effort to stop, reverse and stop again?
In reference to the OP, it's not as loud as my 20D but not by much ;) It bothers me alot when I do candid stuff and street photography but otherwise it's not a problem as I largely do band shots and they're WAY louder than my little ole camera :)

This doesn't make sense. That would mean the XT would be as loud, if not louder than, the 20/30D. And I believe it's the slap "upwards" that makes the most noise, not the return down.

Check out the white paper on the 20D, the fast return electromagnets are the driving force that gives the 20D it's distinctive sound.
As for the "upward" slap making all of the noise, try shooting with mirror lock-up. you will hear a much louder sound when the mirror returns than when it locks up.

I used BULB and it still sounded louder on the upwards than down. But I'm using the 30D and not the 20D...so therein may be the difference.
Either way the rest of your argument makes no sense for reasons I already stated.

My 30D sounds quieter than my 20d (or at least sounds like a more solid slap.) Even though they are loud, they aren't that loud... I've taken pictures at concerts and wildlife pictures and never had the problems people describe.

People, people,
They are made this way intentionally, just to drive the Nikonians and P&S shooters nuts.
It's like running with loud pipes on a Harley. When you own the best, you want the world to know!

When I was fondling a 30D at my local camera store last weekend I didn't think the shutter was too loud. Sure, it is louder than my 300D but it wasn't obnoxiously so IMO. It didn't make me want it any less anyway. ;)

stupot: Canon's got a variable-speed mirror specifically designed to reduce mirror noise - it's controlled by either a custom or personal function in the 1-series cameras. Sorry, no 1-series here so I don't know whether it's Cfn or Pfn ;)
The 20/30D series cameras definitely have a distinctive shutter noise. Used to own a 20D along with my 350D/5D. The price of 5fps, I should think. Mirror slap is also more substantial, I can feel it in my hands, whereas the 350D is negligible. It's telling that I don't use MLU with the 350D because the mirror is so light it hardly hurts my night shots.
Interestingly, Liquidstone (king of the long tele and bird photos) mentioned the 350D has less mirror slap as well.
I use the 350D when mirror silence is a priority. It's my "reduce mirror noise" personal choice.. not function ;)
The 5D sits somewhere in between the two. Slightly louder, but mirror slap is still low. I've switched to using MLU though, much easier with the Custom Settings exposure mode.
Now, medium format - now that's a serious mirror. Was drinking coffee with a friend and the cafe had a photographer doing some product shoots with hot lights and a medium format system. We were around 10ft away and his mirror sounded as loud as my 350D mirror when held in front of my face!

So how do I turn off the shutter sound? Or change the sound it makes ;)
I do like the sound my XT makes, I want to buy the 30D, but never thought much about shutter sound...Hopefully the 40D will address this "issue"... but I highly doubt it.

coming from a 350D, i tend to think the opposite. the 30D might be a bit meatier sound, a bit more low end, but the 350D was a bit more trebly and overall more noticeable.
