Hey guys,
just got the SD700 IS!!
I do plan to shoot lots of movies, got a 1 GB SD card.. However the problem is that even though it records in AVI format, files are HUGE!
In geenral avi is used to compress the mpg/mpeg files, however, shooting a movie for
1 minute with Standard, 640 x XXX, 30 fps = 100 MB+ file!
This is very inefficient. Is there a setting that can adjust that?
If not, are there any experts in divx, xvid and video formats that can tell me or point to a guide how can I recompress the AVI to something with descent size without loosing too much of quzlity.
Thanks in advance!

100megs a minute isn't that bad actually, DV videos are more like a gig a minute. Depends what you want to do with the video. You can burn a VCD / DVD using your average burning program (nero) probably without having to convert the video.
If you are using windows XP u have a movie maker program that exports to wmv for web. You can download the divx codec and use a program to compress your video but other people also need the codec to view it.

Well, for example i shoot a 1 min movie last nigt and wanted to send it to my brother thru e-mail -- but 100 MB c'mon. If you tihnk about them DVDrips of a movie which is 1 h 30 mins at least -- are ripped to 699 MB, how can I achieve this compression ratio without significant loss for movies I shoot with the SD700.
I cannot possibly burn a data CD for a 1 minute movie :) every time i want to send my bro or my parents a video. I konw i is a compromize b/w quality and size, but quzlity for 1 min - 100 MB better be dvd -like :)

You may have to look at a program like Studio by Pinacle or at primer Elements by Adobe. They have settings to convert for the web for e-mailing. But other than that I believe you are stuck with the size of your vidio. The only other sugestion would be to compile several video clips, then burn and send them.

Ripping DVD's to 699mb is the use of divx and the 700mb size is perfect for burning on a CD. If you want to make a divx, go here (http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/converter/). If you are on a windows based computer, XP has the movie maker free so you can try that first.

Try "Auto Gordian Knot" at http://www.autogk.me.uk/ its a very easy to use program and turns in superb quality XVid and DivX files with out much scratching of the head.
It does 2 passes so a bit slow (about real-time on each pass) but I've always been pleased with the results and you can play around with compression options if you want to get your file smaller.
If youre having problems playing your Canon video files here is one user's experience... http://www.vonglahn.com/video_codec.htm
