I don't know what happened, I was shooting in my yard, camera set to M, when all of a sudden it got "stuck". I'm not able to press the shutter, though I can change the settings just fine. I tried turning it off, but the camera doesn't shut down.
What happened? What can I do?
PS: Its a Rebel XT

Turn off the camera, remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, and put it back in, turn it back on.

Pull the battery(ies)...turn switch to off...reinstall battery(ies).

This happenes every now and they with the 350D
Take the battery out and leave it for a few seconds then put it back in. It should work fine then.
This has happened twice to me and is never a reall issue

Yeah, cameras are not what they were like 30 years ago. Now they are complex computer systems that happen to have a shutter and sensor. And whenever you have a system that complex, it's bound to need a 'reboot' every now and then.
I worry so much more now about camera reliability now (on a paid shoot) than I ever did using the AE-1. The AE-1 never failed. My 20 or 30D typically locks up on me at least once during a shoot. :(

ie: "Reboot"
And just like an ATX system running Windows,. or a MAc,. the only way to turn it off is by yanking the plug

I've never had a lock-up (mainly using a 20D) so far.
Maybe one of your lenses is dodgy or something?
Maybe I have just been lucky so far?

I'd be getting my gear checked if I was having problems with that frequency. In over 40,000 shots taken with my 20D I can count the number of times it has frozen on one hand.

Are you sure you just didn't have the shutter speed set to 30" or Bulb while in M? :)

I had this happen once about 3 months after I bought my XT. found that it is common to happen every now and then. It has only happened to me once thank goodness. Glad to know it was nothing serious! Keep on shooting!

My XT have freezed only once, and it was a dodgy grip contact. I have retighten the lot and no problem since. I'm at 14000 shots

Never had it happen to my XT yet. I am 8,000 so far. But, thanks for this advice cause without knowing this I would freak. Thanks!

annoying isn't it the first time that happens?
Caught me right in the middle of a very interesting shoot and I lost it . Had no idea how to fix - (remove and replace battery)

My 30D started doing this after I started using a different brand 2GB memory card. Have got rid of the card now and everything is fine.
I will say again I LOVE SANDISK!!
