In the fast moving monitor market place I am looking for a replacement TFT monitor in the UK to replace my 15" HP f50s TFT, I know the advise suggests CRT is probably better but I have also heard reports of good TFTs.

I am looking for 17-19" TFT around the £500 UK mark, I understand I ought to consider the following

Contract ratio 500:1
DVI input and get a DVI card (does this mean I don't need to upgrade my geforce graphics card to the highly recommended Matrox)

PS I have also just ordered the colourvisio Spyder to use for calibration.

Any particular models or recommendations apreciated, also anything to avoid

john

ok, I've done some homework

shortlisted the following

Sony HS93H 19" 700:1 contrast (analogue)
Samsung 19" SM192 or 193 500:1 DVI
Sharp LL-T19D1 19"
EIZO L767 19" 500:1 DVI
EIZO CG18 400:1 DVI

any comments on these. I appreciate its subjective but comments are appreciated

I went with the Samsung. Hurry, however, as the units that will be produced next year will use a different substrate and offer a lower contrast ratio.

I ordered the Colorvision Spyder and the printer calibration tool as well.

This is kinda wild shortlist. You go from about $600 up to $1600 for the EIZO CG18.

How much do you want to spend? In most cases, the more the better. But not always. THough I'll assume that the EIZO CG is here by mistake.

A ZDNet review trashed the Sharp as mediocre and overpriced. I've never heard of that particular Sony, but if its only got analog jacks, you don't want it. If you get a flat panel, you want first a card that does digital, and then a screen that can use digital. Its hard enough using TFTs for quality color rendition without further handicapping yourself. EIZOs are well regarded. That's all I got, but I know there are a few other names out there in your price range.
