Taken a couple of years ago at the London (Ontario) Airshow. There are five stages of afterburner in an F-14, so full 'burner is called Zone 5. It's only slightly less impressive than a Saturn V launch. I will always miss that sound.

Welcome to POTN,
This photo is awesome!! The after burner effect is great! When I was in the Navy, we could barely ever see the afterburners...:(

It was 1/800 at f7.1 at full zoom on the Canon 70-200 (non IS) f2.8.
It's way cropped - in the original the jet fills less than 1/3 of the frame.
The lens has enough reach to capture larger aircraft at most airshows and is fine for aircraft over the runway but a 300 is what I really need, I think. I may try a teleconverter but I have no idea whether I'd like it.

I used a Sigma 1.4x EX teleconverter at the Reno Air Races (look below for pics) and was pleased. It wasnt as sharp, but I was able to recover the sharpness in Bibble, thanks to RAW :)
edit:This was with my Sigma 70-200 F2.8

I understand totally about the sound of a Saturn 5 thing. I saw Apollo 8 lift off as a kid and that sound has stuck with me. I've seen a shuttle launch, but it isn't the same.
The F-14 shot os awesome - thanks for sharing.

Awesome picture of the Tomcat! I'll miss them although I don't see them around here. I used to live near Langley AFB and I saw them daily.
