Thanks for the comments guys :)

First shot is a first in more ways than one, Lewis Hamilton's first drive of the McLaren F1 car after winning the 2006 GP2 Championship

Thanks Elliot, you must have been standing virtually next to us ! We were pretty much in the same spot all day, due to the mobility of the 800 lol

Pretty hard to hold steady, specially as we tried using the fence to start with, but that proved hard to pan, so setup the tripod, and the fence disappeared without any issues ! even focussing through the metal post it was invisible !

Heres one shot i thought wouldnt come out even as well as it did ! lol

I did see a few large ones so to speak ;-)

lol yes there were a lot of large lenses there, i have some shots of the breakdown with the landrover recovery vehicle as well, i think looking at the angles, you would have been to the right of us, nearer the merchandising stand thingy !

mostly i was as you say towards the burgers ;-) just to the left of the emergency gate where the fence is lower for those without a ladder.......
i was in a beige porsche club polo with reebok cap and orange oakleys :-)

can i ask how you resize your pics for the net as your are a lot sharper than mine.
i slightly crop/rotate in Adobe CS then batch resize all at 998 pix saved at 9 on quality ?
a question im always wondering................

I do levels, rotate if needed, crop if needed, resize to max of 800 pixels on longest side, then apply a little usm as well if needed, then do save for web, keep it below 170k and thats it mainly.

Awesome! Gutted I missed that. Today two engines went and I missed both of them pop. Typical eh?!! I seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Good shot again Ian. You and that 800 seem to do well together!

Gonna post a couple of my pics up in a sec...

May go myself as well today, specially as i have just looked out the window and the sun is shining again :) although it will be without the 800 as my mate lives in Manchester and its a bit of a trek to bring it down ! lol

Just be the 100-400 if i go ! :)

Well i went along again today, what a great days testing, lots of cars out except the spykers, managed to shoot a load of rapid pix and captured Lewis H spinning into the kitty litter at Luffield and getting stuck.
I dont have time at the mo to upload them but will post the link when ive completed.

I also shot a great set of sharp pics as i upped the sharpness to the top in the parameters with an extra bit on saturation, seemed to have worked, im sure you will tell me otherwise ;)

Great pictures

I'm thinking about going to a Silverstone F1 test day next year.

I plan to take my new Canon 100-400 Is lens.

At what part of the circuit can you watch, I hear the whole circuit is not open.

Where is the best place to take pictures from (will only be there as general public access, no passes or anything)

Obviously I will only be watching from the general public's spectators viewing area. Is there any restrictions of what pictures you can take.

The reason why I ask at a recent football match, I had all my camera ready and I was told by one of the stwedards that I cannot take pictures, hoping there are no such restrictions at Silverstone.

Awesome shots, considering that the 800mm must be quite a handful!

The circuit is open from Bridge through to Copse so you'll need to use a bit of imagination to stop yourself from getting bored and the best place you'll find to shoot from will be at Luffield as you can move around a bit and try different angles.

There are no restrictions as to what you can shoot as long as you stay within the public areas. Your problem at the football match was you need a football league licence to shoot games so if thats what you want to do you are best off hanging around you're local non-league side.
