I'm a new member and new G5 owner in search of an external flash.
I recently converted from 35mm SLR to digital and am wondering if I HAVE to buy Canon products for my G5. I have an old Pentax ME Super (I know, that's an oldie) but I bought a Sunpak Auto 30DX flash for it that always worked fine.
I've scoured the web via Google (which is beginning to tick me off 'cause all that ever comes back is places selling stuff) and this forum but am having trouble finding info on which flashes may work with my new toy.
Any help out there?

Well, you do want to be careful about which non-Canon flash you put on the camera, even to test. Some flashes, cheaper ones, older ones, use a different voltage and a different triggering circuit that can seriously damage your camera.
Of course you can hunt around and find a number of flashes that will work within limitations, but none will work as well as a Canon flash. And just any old flash that works may give you more nightmares than just sticking with the built in flash.
My advice is do it right and get a Canon 420EX and be done with it. Compromises are going to show up in your pix, and if you are not getting good pix, what the hell have you got a G5 for?

I agree with John, 420ex is worth to have and IMO the most important accessory for G3/G5, it is not only enhance your indoor shots but also very good for fill flash.

There are always multiple ways to skin a cat -- you can use *any* flash safely with a product such as the Wein SafeSync, which optically separates the camera from the flash.
$49 at B&H.

Right, but I have read more than a few posts on this forum and others where the unaware learned about the SafeSynch AFTER frying their cameras.
