View Full Version : 25K wishlist - what would be in your bag?

Was reading the 50K P&S (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=217435) thread, and it got me thinking, what would I do with 50K. The trouble with 50K is it's to close to one of everything, so lets give half away to charity. Now you feel good and can spend it without to much guilt. So now we have $25k, and can buy whatever you like. The only rules are that you start with nothing, no existing gear. You can have it in local currency if you like (use XE (http://www.xe.com) to convert to local currency).
So what's on your 25K shopping list?
All the best

well my ideal would be a 5d, 30d, 17-40, 24-105, 70-200 f4is, 300 f4, 500 f4, 1.4x tc. so with a decent tripod and accessories that might put me at about $17000? and that gives me $8000 left to go on a couple of amazing holidays:)

Time to have some fun on B&H. This came round to $25k
5D (landscape + general)
1Ds MII (sport)
16-35mm L
24-70mm L
70-200mm L
100-400mm L
35mm L
50mm f/1.4
5mm L
100mm f/2.8
135mm L
200mm L
3 x 4gb Sandisk III
Manfroto 3182 Tripod
Manfroto 695 Monopod
3 x 580EX Flash
I think for $25k one could get pretty much the whole of the canon range with the exception of some telephotos. If I had to pick 7 items from that it would be:
5D
16-35mm L
50mm
80mm L
100mm
135mm
70-200mm L
All for $11k

I'd buy a 600 + 1DMkIIN. With the remaining money I'd hire Ronald S. Jr. to sherpa the lens for me in search of wildlife around the NY state, for $5.00/hr, for one whole year. I'd also let him take a shot...here and there....with his 5D/24-70, that is.

I'd get:

600 f/4L IS
300 2.8L IS
16-35L
1.4x and 2x TC's
24 TS-E L
180L
Sigma 300-800
Comes in at $25,073.60. I can make up the difference.

Lol. I don't think my wife would take kindly to it if I considered something similar. In fact, lack of monogamy is why she dumped her ex.
Personally, given the tales of drugs, alcohol and promiscuity that surrounds all models I would rather not get too involved with models (even if I was single). Oddly enough, I think women look much more erotic, exotic, attractive and sensual with their clothes... on!

Yeah it is fun to see what people would do, was interesting seing people pick the 5D over the 1DS mk2, and some of the choices of kit were very interesting. Also have to appreciate StuPots saving 8K to go on holiday with, and that some people are happy with what they have, that's a nice place to be. You said 30" dual screens, meaning two 30" monitors. I don't know about the Apple, but the Dell 30" requires a Dual DVI capable video card. I would only have to assume that to have two would require 4. As in, you'd need dual video cards, and likely 512's at that.

I think for the UK folks on here, the budget should be more, since it would end up costing them a fair amount more for the same gear.

I'll have a try in this fantasy photo-monopoly game. Since the money is to be spent on photography and Angelina Jolie isn't on the item list (how about for a photoshoot? :D), I'd probably go in a different from Canon direction (for sh$%s and giggles).
I would invest in Leica M8 (/all prices are approximate/ $5K), MP ($3K), Noctilux ($4K), Summilux 75mm ($3.5K), Elmarit 21mm ($3.5K), Summicron 90mm ($3K), some accesories ($1.5k), which leaves about $2.5k and I would buy two 24-70L lenses for Ron. :D

Personally if I was to spend $25K I'd probably go for the following:
5D,
24-105 f4 IS.
70-200 F4 IS,
ST-E2,
430EX,
3021BN + ProMaster 3D head,
Camera backpack,
Battery grip,
second battery,
A ton of large memory cards,
MacBook Pro 14",
Verizon wifi card,
Lens wipes,
Kasemann polarisers for both lenses,
Kasemann UV filters for both lenses.
I don't know how much all that would cost but I'd guess maybe 10K. As to the remaining 15K - I'm not really sure. I don't use anything much wider than 24mm with film nor wider than 17mm with digital. Similarly the longest lens I commonly use is 135-200mm with film and 75mm with digital (on a 1.6 crop). I do have a 70-300 but in reality I just don't use it. It's too long and too dark (without IS).
I think that although I could go for faster lenses, IS is possibly more important as it gives me more than just a signle extra stop.

Oh, when travelling I'd also go to some seminars & workshops by some pro's. Of course also visit POTN:ers.
I'd ask Condyk to teach me how to see details in my surrounding
Yep, he'll show you how to see every little detail in each door you encounter.

I am really surprised that so many would like to get the Bigma instead the 100-400 L IS from Canon.
I'm totally happy with the Canon and cannot understand the hype for the Bigma,
Did I miss something???

Well you know, I'm not up with lenses and all that stuff so I'd give my 25k to someone else to spend for me. My only requirement would that I'd want stuff for a studio setup!

It's $600 less than the 100-400, and has 100mm more on the long end. I love the L, but sometimes it's hard to pass up such a value.

Ok, then as long as it's fantasy, my mom then gives me everything else.
If you want me to really play by the rules, I'd say (taking rough estimates of price):
5D
1DMkIIN
35L
24-70L
70-200L IS
300 2.8L IS
500 f/4L IS
Sigmonster
That comes to $22,600. The rest would buy the extras (support, bag, CF's, etc.)
Alright, change of plan, I think. Here's the new list.
5Dx2
1DMkIIN
15 FE
24-70L
35L
50L
85L MkII
135L
300 2.8L IS
Sigmonster
580EX- x2
There. That comes to around $25k. I might have to throw in a few bucks of my own to buy CF's, support, bags, etc.
