Alright, I have searched all over the web. Apparently there is no driver needed for my windows XP. It's supposed to use PTP? Problem is whenever I try and use Camera Window or any software to access thecamera I can not get my files. I can access images via photoshop, but I can not get to my videos. When using zoom browser or anyother cannon software it says the camera is not connected. What's wrong? The software works fine.. so it must be an XP error? Is there some sort of driver I can get?

Do you have a card reader? Try using windows explorer.

When connecting the camera can you see "Found new hardware" message?
There are some Canon cameras that have in the menu the option to select PTP or not. As far as i know this one doesn't, so we will dismiss this option. Have u used Camera window utility provided on the solution disk? Try using other usb ports.
If you have SP 2 this might cause the problem, because is not alowing some devices to be recognized by the computer. In this case i will advice you to download the updater from Microsoft site.

Hi
I am running XP Pro SP2 and have no problem. The card reader idea is probably the best one and quickest.

no drivers needed ?.
i don't know about the s3, but the s2 manual is very clear about that: do not connect the cam until you've installed the drivers. Maybe for the s3, this is not required....
Now, which usb ports are you using?, the rear or front ones?.

Hi
I just connected my S3 to my laptop and voila, it was recognized and I am able to transfer images and videos.
I am running XP Pro on a fairly new laptop- so maybe the driver was included.

This came from http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/pss2is/system03-e.html
Required software for downloading images from the camera to your computer: Windows 98 SE/Me/2000 SP4 Please install the software and driver bundled on the supplied Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk onto your computer before connecting the camera to a computer. Windows XP (including SP1/SP2) Mac OS X (v10.1.5-v10.3) This camera adopts the PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) standard. You can use the software distributed with these operating systems to download images without installing the software bundled on the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk. * Please install the software bundled on the supplied Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk onto your computer to download sound files from the camera to a computer.
So, if you are using XP no drivers to download pictures are required only if you want to use included canon software.

i did not know that... in fact, once again, the manual is pretty clear
thanks for the correction ;)
and, do you lost the connection when transferring?, or the connection itself never establishes?.
i'm askin' this because i cannot use the front usb ports on my computer, whenever i connect the cam, windows detects it, canon soft is launched; that part is always ok... but, the connection is suddenly lost when transferring the data (if it's a small amount, 1 or 2 pics, it might work ok)... The same thing happens when i use the remote control feature... It starts ok, and then, after a few seconds of live feedback from the camera on the screen, the connection is again lost....
but, using the rear usb ports, works all this strange things out... don't ask me why, but that's the way it works for me
haven't had any problem since then ;)

Just remember using the usb ports is using batery of the camera. A card reader is a wonderful accessory and so inexpensive now a days. And with a card reader and windows xp there is no drivers to load, windows detects as a drive(s).
The usb problem is probablt a setting in your computers bios.

So as you can see.. the computer can tell it's there. Though when connected nothing auto loads. Plus I can only get images through ArcSoft using aquire..which means I have to save every single one at a time and I cant access videos. WTF do I do?

I find that using the USB cord is the fastest way to transfer pics?

I have the same problem too sometimes with various Powershot cameras.
Try using one of the other usb ports, mostly that suddenly works ok.
Very odd though, just try other usb ports.

As several have suggested, get a card reader. Much more convenient to just plug the SD card into the reader than hook up the camera. Then use Windows Explorer and just copy/paste from the reader to your HD.
This will also help diagnose your problem by eliminating the camera usb interface as the problem. I'd get a reader that attaches to your pc with a usb cable rather than one that directly plugs into the desktop usb connector. Even if your problem ends up being with your desktop or xp, once you get that resolved you'll find using the reader more convenient than using the camera and canon software to transfer.
Here's a bunch of readers. I've bought several over the years for myself and family members and have had no problems. All were in the $10-15 range delivered.
