I did a 10 second edit of this image to see if this is the artistic direction I want to take. Please C&C, but please ignore the brush stroke in the window, I forgot to take that out.

Please, if you are going to vote "work on it some more" please give suggestions. Again, ignore the brush stroke in the top of the window.
Here is the original unedited version.

Personally, I prefer the color image. The PP'd shot feels cold, where the full color gives more a sense of warmth and shelter against the cold outside as suggested by your title.
The window would definitely benefit from a bit more work.

I do like the on after pp better, however its wayyyy to busy for me.. with the pattern in the tablecloth and also in the comforter. Something plain and simple would would work better in my oppinion.

I like parts of both, but I like the cooler effect of the edited version. I think it might be a little over sharpened which makes it look busier, but that might just be my monitor. I think you should make the red in the lamp a shade in between the original and the edit. Also, soften the window pane behind the lamp glass so it has more of a foggy effect like the original. The top of the lamp almost disappears into the window in the edited version. I like the crack effect on the window in the edit, maybe lighten the area around the window. The subject is popular for selling.

Too busy .... if I softened the focus of the table cloth do you think that would help?

Jeff-
I like it, very neat idea. It makes me wonder where it was taken and whats outside the window... which is a good thing. I don't really get a "cold" vibe though and part of that might be the red in the lamp. Anyways, I told you I was bad with these types of photographs but I'll try my best to give you a few critiques.
I think this conversion is slightly overdone, whether its in the contrast or sharpening, something is a little loud for me. Thats more an opinion than a critique though, so take it at face value. The table cloth I agree needs less focus or something, between it and the bedsheet/cover, they're just too dominant to be side elements if you know what I mean.
I do like all the darkness in it, many would say it doesn't add to the photo so it shouldn't be there. I disagree I think it adds to the eerie feeling I get which is really what I see the most in this shot, eerie versus cold.
I'll stare at it a while longer/come back and try to give you some better critiques, but I think you're on the right track, you definitely have alot of skill doing this.

Sorry for the late response Jeff. I've been a bit sick the past few days and completely forgot about this thread. I personally like the PP'd version because it does have a cold winter day feeling to it. For some weird reason it makes me think of a room I'd imagine in one of those novels set in the canadian praries or some farmland style where it's cold. It is a little busy but I think that depending on what you wanted to convey with the image, it might work.

I really like the first one, it does make you feel cold. The cup reminds me of times when I lived in wyoming and it was cold outside and I drank some tea or coca to get warmer. I love it.

Thanks for the comments everyone! You too Dimitry. You get extra for being sick. I'm kinda sick too. I went to shoot mushrooms in the state park near my house and I got a major amount of poison ivy. Thanks to you too Shawn, at least I got one "really like the first one" and "I love it".
I'm going to re-edit this for quality and to use your suggestions. The lamp oil will be red, the bedspread and tablecloth won't be as stark, and if I can bring out a little more detail of the window frame I will. It's going to be one of gallery submissions, so thanks again. I post it here when I'm done.

Very cool...I'm glad you won. Was there some sort of prize at the end?

Alas...only for the judge?, but a sale at the gallery or the prize for best in show at the gallery would be nice. It's going to a gallery showing / competition tommorrow.
My local camera club has 6 competitions a year with 3 catagories - color, B&W, and slide. I've only joined and entered in the last 3, but I have always won one of the catagories each time. That's an accomplishment with judges being so subjective. I won slide this time and B&W the last 2 times.
My slide that won I put in as a joke to see how well it would do and it won. I basically went out behind work and snapped a shot of a symetrical cluster of leaves that were turning brown. You never know how a judge will look at things.
How have you been? Anything in the works?

Wait...so was this the photo that one and is going to the gallery or the leaves? Also, post the leaves, now I want to see it.
I'm doing good. Just busy with work and starting up a my own business. I did some product photography for a friend and did a mini shoot recently for another who's starting up a business. Other than that it's all quiet until this sat, when I 2nd at a wedding again.

They have been PP'd more since I posted them above, but are close to what's on the threads. The mountain shot I have printed on canvas and looks so much like a painting.
The leaf slide I will have to scan in to post, but I'll do it this weekend.
