Here's a little HS football action from Friday night. There were terrible storms in the area but luckily the storms missed us. C&C always welcome and appreciated, exif is embedded. I have another game to shoot Saturday afternoon and their calling for more rain, but I should have a little better light.

These look GREAT!! I looked through your gear list trying to figure out what lens you used. 300? You don't have anything super fast, do you use a flash? These are fantastic images Chirs!

Thanks for the comments everyone. They were shot with the 300 f4L and no I didn't use a flash.

you must have taken advantage of the 3200 iso then, darn I wish the 350D could go that high, I am having problems at our football games, mabye our lights are brighter? anyway keep the good shots coming.

Chris,

Let me presume you're open to somme constructive criticism, since you posted here. Firstly, your timing is very good, and you've captured solid action, especially the second and the last shots (the last one would have been best shot from the other side so you could have caught the receiver's face, but you can't control that).

I'm wondering why you're shooting at ISO 1600, though? With your lens only going to f4.0, you need every bit of help you can get.

I checked your EXIF info and see you shot these at 1/250, which is really too slow at the HS level, and it shows in your shots. Your timing is good, but there is motion blur, and lack of sharpness due to the shutter just maybe being one stop too slow. You can see the blur in the player's hands and the ball. One stop faster and he shots would be sharp. Going to ISO 3200 and you would be up to 1/500.

I know a lot of shooters are afraid of ISO 3200, but with proper use of noise reduction software, you can produce useable images. Also, you might want to think about flash. It'll improve the contrast of your images, and brighten up the faces. Shooting on HSS and in manual, and you migh be amazed how much better your images would look, even with a f4.0 lens.

Anyway, your skills are good. Keep shooting and posting.

Dennis,

Thanks for the comments. I understand 3200 would have uped my SS but I didn't want the noise. I would rather have a little motion blur than the noise. I was shooting with my 1D and I think my 20D is actually better at 3200 than the 1D is.

I like the expression of 82 in the second one. Must be nice to have that extra reach on the 300.

I've started changing where I shoot to be more downfield; not sure if I like it yet, but I'm trying something different.

Did you use any noise reduction on these?

Thanks guys. It is nice having the extra reach of the 300, but it can also be a PITA. They were run through Neat Image.
