I've been shooting a lot of volleyball lately for the two area newspapers, and I must say it's a lot easier this year. Still, the sport is one of the most challenging to capture due to the fast action and unpredictability of play. The following are an assortment of "sportraits" and action shots from the season thus far.

Really good looking stuff here Liza. I like the look on the first girls face as she looks out at the game. And number 6 is just a great grab!!!!!!
Good work.

I cringe when I have to shoot a volleyball game, You seem to capture it well.

Red... and just lots of it. I had forgotten how much red you have in your shots. These look great Liza, looks like your well back in the swing of things.

Thanks guys. Yes, Mark, red is everywhere in our gym, making it just that much more a challenge. :)

Great shots! What lens did you use?

I usually alternate between the 200L and the 100 f/2.

If I had to depend on anyone to do this kind of shooting it would be you Liza. Good job. My brother and his friend have daughters on a varsity volleyball team and they have pulled out all the stops to get the equipment necessary to get good pictures of their girls. I've guided them to the best settings and they are very happy.

I like the expressions in 1&2 but the timing in 6 is nearly perfect!

PS: It's about time I see sports out of you for a change. *wink wink nudge nudge* :p

Thanks. I know I was past due for posting sports shots. It was a long summer with nothing to shoot. :)

Great little photo story of volleyball action...

I like # 2 best and am way partial to torso and net shots with ball in sight...

Looking forward to more of your action postings...

you seem to have the action down. I find that with most sports I photograph knowing the tendencies of the teams helps a lot...knowing who is most likely to be set up is important to capture the kill.

the only comment Liza is take a look at your background. A few of he later shots have that tilt which is distracting...

Cheers,

Great work, Liza!
I'd have to say #4 is my favorite.
