I have a Promaster FTD 4500 aftermarket flash unit that I have been using on an ElanIIe/qd. I recently purchased a Digital Rebel, and this unit will only work at full power, no TTL.

Any insight?

Ken

Canon digital cameras will not support TTL, only ETTL. If your flash has it's own thyrisor and Auto Mode on it, you can use that and the camera will ony trigger the flash and not control its output. If not, then your only other option is to set the flash manually on the flash(not the camera).
Sorry,
Scott

I think I saw a thread about flash on this forum, but can't seem to find the answer. I have the 300d and and I have found that the built in flash has limitations to distance with a longer lens (or I could be doing something wrong). I would like to take Pics at night or indoors, like on a Cruise Ship (in November of 2004) and need the flash to help me. I am wondering if I REALLY need the 550 or can I get away with Sigma's Flash. Can anyone direct me in the right direction or let me know what I can use. I don't realy do lots of night or indoor photography. Thanks

I'm not sure what the confusion is.

If you want to take flash shots, then an external flash unit like this is the way to go. A 550EX, sitting on the hot shoe, gets the light up farther away from the lens axis, so you get slightly less of a red-eye problem. If you connect the 550EX farther out, like on a flash bracket, then you will get even less red-eye yet.

The 550EX has a significantly higher Guide Number, as compared to the internal flash. So, you get much longer range.

The 550EX does E-TTL, which is the primary flash mode of the camera. The internal flash does that also, but the 550EX does it in a major way. There is an infrared emitter that faces the subject to aid the focus function.

We could go on and on this way. All of the features are listed on the Canon web site.

Thank you Robert. Appreciate the info, especially since I am new to photography.
