This is my first post in the forums and I hope it is useful for the ones who don't have a remote shutter!

I am still trying to get one push button which I can use to replace the two buttons. I need one which has two stops as the one in the camera.

I ended up buying a Canon remote release. Sure I could have built one but don't have a soldering iron, solder, wires or switches hanging around. By the time I'd hunted for a shop that sells soldering irons it was just faster and easier to buy one.

By the time I found this website I had already made my own diagram which turned out to be the same as this guy's... But as I like doing this kind of stuff, I will not buy the original... At least not now...

You had to find a place that sold soldering irons? Just run to your local hardware store lol.

Hard to do when your local shops are best buy, wal mart, k-mart, target etc. There just are no corner shops near me. It's all big places like that which sell boxes and nothing else.

awesome write up, on my 5d has the n3 type connector on it, does anyone know where to find such a connector to buy online? I remember there was a post on here about a homemade shutter release for a 5d, but I can't find it.

Excellent info, and very cool!

I too already have a remote release, but if I did not, you can bet I'd be building this.

N3 connectors are Canon proprietary. The cheapest source is to buy a Adidt remote or similar and cut off the cable - but if you do that, you already have a remote!

In the end, I bought the Canon TC-80N3. It's not a cheap solution, but I've found numerous uses for the timer.

What does an N3 connector look like? I doubt that Canon would do anything as daft as making their own connectors. Manufacturers that do that usually find their costs go up and that's just not good.

The N3 female can be seen on this page (http://www.samys.com/product.php?ItemNo=MAMI804501) - the N3 connector is at the right. The male connector on the camera can be seen here (http://www.camerahacker.com/Canon/N3_Pinout.shtml) (N3 to the right, PC to the left).

The 'real' Canon N3 connectors are all right angled, and have a metal locking piece.

I have the dRebel so I got mine for $1 at the dollar store. It's just the hands-off earphone wire. And it retracts:):)

I did exactly the same a few months ago: I used a small flash light and transplanted two buttons of a mouse.

Checkout where the lightbulb used to be, I screwed the socket for the 3,5mm plug in there. If I want I can use an ordinary headphone extension cord (male/female).
