IMHO cats as usually more interesting with their eyes open. By the way, I like your dog pic:

The top of the shot is bright - disturbing bright. I find my eyes snapping to it - it competes with the cat far too much. A judicious crop, or selective darkening would be a big help. What lens was this? The pinpoints of light in this region may be what's disturbing my eyes.

I agree about the eyes on the cat.

Great job on the tones on the cat itself.

Hmmm... now that you've said it, I agree with the disturbing upper region but I felt that lightening would be more apropriate than darkening:

Also true that cats are more interesting with eyes open, but the idea in this photo is that the cat is zen-like peacefuly enjoying even in the freezing cold climate which could not have been that obvious if it had open eyes...

There is no 'lens'... I'm still using a Sony 717 and will jump to 10D pretty soon.
