Alright, yesterday I bought myself a digital camera. It's a Canon Powershot S30.
I put the "Canon Digital Camera Solutions Disk" in my CD Rom Drive and I installed all the included programs (Zoombrowser, Remotecontrol, ..), so I could upload my pics to my computer. Then I connected the USB cable to my camera and to my USB port and then I opened "Zoombrowser" to upload my pics but I kept getting the message "Camera Not Detected", but obviously, all the cables and stuff were fine because when I connected the cable to my camera, I heard a noise on my computer. So yeah, after uninstalling and re-installing those programs for like 10 times, I gave up. I went to "Control Panel", "Add Hardware", and there I got a list of programs and hardware, and "PowershotS30" was in the list. So I clicked on it, and it said "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)", so yeah.. I also tried to install the drivers a couple of times, but they just wouldn't work. They did install though, but at the end of the installation, I always got an error message saying "WIA Driver Installation Failed". It's weird.. I tried downloading some WIA Drivers off Canon's website, but they didn't work either, I also got the same message saying that the installation failed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Which Windows version are you working with? You need the right driver for different versions. I think the Canon site gives pretty clear instructions. You may also need to uninstall previous attempts before installing the correct one.

I'm working with Windows XP, so I need the WIA driver.
And yeah, I went to the Canon site and read all the instructions, but the installation still fails everytime I try to install my WIA driver. You say that I need to uninstall all my previous attempts.. but how? Where can I find those, I mean.. I already tried installing them for like 10 times so yeah.. I might need to uninstall them :|

The way I read it you do the following. (Looks like the key is to have the camera connected to be able to see "Imaging Devices" in Device Manager.
1. - Connect the failed camera and set the camera's main switch to .C96
2. - If [Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard] or a software starts, exit it. Do not operate icons shown on Explorer.
3. - Select [Control Panel] from the [Start] menu to display it.
4. - If [Switch to Classic View] is displayed at the top left of [Control Panel], click on it to switch to Classic View.
5. - Select [System] to display it, then [System Properties] will be displayed.
6. - Select the [Hardware] tab and click on the [Device Manager] button, then [Device Manager] will be displayed.
7. - Open [Imaging Devices] from [Device Manager] and select the icon of the connected camera.
8. - Right click on the connected camera icon then select [Uninstall] from the menu that appears.
9. - Set the camera's main switch to .
10. - Re-start the computer.
11. - Set the main switch of the failed camera to .
12. - The Canon Camera WIA Driver will be installed once more to Windows, and the procedure is finished.

Hi msnow.. first of all, thanks for helping me, but;
8. - Right click on the connected camera icon then select [Uninstall] from the menu that appears.
Everything goes fine until there. When I right click on it and click on "Uninstall", I get the following message; "Failed to uninstall this device. The device may be required to boot up the computer."
So yeah, I'm stuck on this.. what do I need to do, to prevent getting that message?

Okay...I went to Powershot support page and here's what it says there in replying to my question on your problem. You should also grab the latest drivers while your up there:

Hope this helps.

How do I uninstall the WIA driver in Windows XP?
If the wrong driver has been installed in Windows XP, or if the driver installation is corrupt, the following procedures should remove the installed driver.
1. Remove the .inf files for the PowerShot camera.
A. Click on 'Start' and 'Search'. When the Search window opens, click on the 'Folders' icon at the top of the window. Navigate to the C: folder.
B. Now click on the 'Search' icon at the top of the window. On the left side, select 'All Files and Folders', and in 'A word or phrase in the file' type "powershot". Click on 'Search'
C. Look at each oemxx.inf (where xx = a one- or two-digit number) file found to determine if it is a Powershot .inf file. (Open the file in Notepad to read). Delete each .inf file containing "Canon Digital Camera" in the first two lines.
2. In Windows Explorer (Start | All Programs | Accessories | Windows Explorer), look in the Windows_32 folder for a 'Canon_DC' folder. If found, delete the entire folder. Close Windows Explorer.
3. Edit the registry to remove any existing PowerShot keys.
Warning: If you are not familiar with editing the Registry, please seek assistance before making any changes.
A. Click on 'Start' and 'Run'. In the window type 'regedit' and click OK.
B. Ensure that the entry 'My Computer' is highlighted at the top of the 'tree' on the left side of the screen. Backup the registry by selecting 'File' and 'Export', saving the file with an appropriate name in the Documents folder.
C. Select 'Edit' and 'Find'. Type 'powershot' in the window, and check the boxes to ensure that only 'Keys' and 'Match Whole String' are checked. Click on 'Find Next'.
D. The search function will stop with a highlighted 'Powershot' folder on the left side of the screen. Press the 'Delete' key and confirm deletion. To continue the search, press the 'F3' key.
E. Continue deleting each 'Powershot' folder found until you see the message "Finished searching through the registry".
F. Scroll back to the top of the tree on the left side of the screen, and again highlight 'My Computer' at the top.
G. Repeat step 3.C above, this time using 'twain' instead of 'powershot'. When a 'Twain' folder is found, check the right side of the screen for an entry titled 'Source 1' or 'Default Source'. Read the 'Data' column to see if it refers to a PowerShot camera. If so, delete the 'Source 1' or 'Default Source' entry.
H. Press the F3 key to repeat the search, and delete any entries referring to the PowerShot camera as in the previous step. Continue searching until you see the message "Finished searching through the registry."
I. Close the registry editor. From the desktop, empty the Recycle Bin, then restart the computer.
4. Install the correct Windows XP Driver. If the camera did not come with Canon Digital Camera Solutions Disk version 7.0 or 7.1, or if the camera is older than the PowerShot S300/A10/A20, the correct Windows XP Driver must be downloaded from the Internet. Be sure to install the driver software before connecting the camera to the computer.
5. When the driver files have been installed, connect the camera to the computer and turn the camera on to complete the installation process. The "New Hardware Found" wizard should start within 5-10 seconds of connecting the camera. Choose the option to "Install the Software Automatically".

Okay, thanks for doing all the research for me!
But I did exactly what you told me to do (twice!), and nothing changed.. still got that same annoying error message at the end of the installation. I took a screenshot of it; here it is:

Pretty ****ed up, no?
If you or anyone else can give me some more advice, please do so because I'd love to get my pics on my computer and it's pretty urgent, so yeah..

Okay, so I take it you went through the registry and all of thie "INF" files and did all of that stuff and went to Canon's Powershot support page and did some of the same research I did with no positive results.
Until you figure it out there is another way to get those images from your camera to your PC. Get a cheap card reader (I think they are about $20) and transfer it that way.

Jay, I understand your frustration. Unfortunately, though Windows tries to put up an intuitive interface, behind it is pure logic, and logically through process of elimination is the only way to go.
I don't think you can uninstall a driver or application that is active, so you are hooked in a vicious circle here. Since it is USB, the driver is only visible when the driver is active, but you can't uninstall the driver when it is active. You also cannot install a WIA driver when the device is connected to a USB port. Catch 22. You need to observe the USB plugging in or out instructions exactly.
While I am thinking about it, make sure your antivirus program is deactivated during this kind of operation. Another possibility that may be interfereing here is the KLEZ.H virus, though your symptoms are a little different. http://www.expressresponse.com/cgi-bin/progsnp/canon_ps/srchjnnp?search_type=vdocument&search_input=0255.htm&session_id=1072291211.17543.4&search_erproduct=PowerShot%5fG5&submit.x=59&submit.y=18
For the complete instructions how to uninstall/reinstall,
Go here http://www.powershot.com/ciw/ppg/PowershotG5.html
Click FAQ under Customer Service. When that window opens, Search by Keyword > Enter WIA in the box > there you will find options for Windows ME (idiots), but in principle, that would be the way to go.
I don't know if this is the answer, it's a PITA. but since, luckily, I haven't had this problem, I don't know how to help you further.
Keep us posted though. You never know who will chime in here with a spot on answer.

I saw a link on another post in the 10D forum that had instructions on removing the WIA Driver (pasted below). It's only slightly different but I saw the piece about putting the camera in "Replay Mode". I don't need to do that on my 10D to remove the driver but maybe it's required on yours. In any case, worth a try. It's hard to believe that removing all references to the driver in the registry wouldn't have gotten rid of it.
1.1.1.2. Uninstalling the USB WIA Driver
1. Attach the supplied USB cable to the computer's USB port and the camera's Digital Terminal, and set the camera to Replay mode.
2. If an application program such as ZoomBrowser EX starts, close it. If a window opens, cancel it.
3. Click the [Start] menu and click [Control Panel].
4. In the [Control Panel], click the [Printers and Other Hardware] icon.
5. Click the [Scanners and Cameras] icon.
6. Select the icon of your camera model, right-click on the icon of your camera and select [Delete]. Then close the window.
7. Click the [Start] menu and select [All Programs], [Canon Utilities], [Digital Camera USB WIA Driver], and [USB WIA Driver Uninstall]. Then the uninstall procedure will start

Okay, I bought myself a Flash Card Reader and guess what? It doesn't work.
I tried plugging it into both USB ports.
XP does detect it, because when I plug it in, a message comes in which says "New Hardware Found: USB CF".
Then I get on the
-----------------------------------
"Welcome To The New Found Hardware Wizard",
This wizard helps you install software for:
USB CF
If your hardware came with an installation CD, insert it now. ***
What do you want the wizard to do?
-Install software automatically (Recommended)
-Install from a list or a specific location (Advanced)
-----------------------------------------
No matter which one I choose, I always get on a menu saying;
"Cannot install this software. The hardware was not installed because the wizard can not find the necessary software."
**** When I put the CD (which was included in the flash card reader package) into the CD Rom Drive, a menu appears. On that menu, I click on "Install Software Driver", and the installation runs perfectly. When the installation is completed, it says "Setup has finished copying files to your computer. Before you can use the programs, you'll have to restart your computer."
So then that's what I do.. I restart my computer. When my computer is restarted, I see that the CD installed something on my :C drive, called "Media Reader" and another thing called "Format Shell", when I try opening the Format Shell application, I get the following "Could not find any valid device for formatting. Please make sure that you have connected the proper digital media device in the USB port (or) the media is NOT present in the device."
In the folder of "Media Reader", there isn't even an EXE application .
But didn't you guys say that if I plugged it in the USB port, I should automatically get a list of pics that were on the memory card or something? That doesn't happen. When I plug it in, I just get the "New Hardware Found" message again.... please help me guys, because I really don't know what to do anymore!

First of all you didn't waste your money. You're going to need this anyway. It sounds like you have some OS problems or maybe even (small chance) hardware issues.
What's in the "media reader" folder? Is it an "INF" file and/or "DLL's"?

DLL and INF files, as you can see.

Your link is broken but I'll take your word for it. So I'm going to assume that when you added the device you pointed the wizard to that directory to do the install but it still failed. I'm stumped then....if it was me (but I'm anal about stuff like this) I'd give up on troubleshooting it and back up all of my stuff, format the drive and reinstall the OS and everything else (including the service pack and all of the updates from Windows Updates). At least that would elimate the OS as the culprit. Incidentally, do other USB devices install on your system?
Jaytrixer
27th of December 2003 (Sat), 20:26
For viewing the image, just click on the link and then click your Refresh button. And yep I pointed the wizard to the exact directory where my CD is.... and still I got the "Cannot install device, because necessairy software not found" notification. -Do any other USB devices install on my system? I have no clue about that...
Formatting my drive would be the last thing I'd do, though.
It just ****ing sucks because if the Flash Card Reader didn't work, I have to return it to the shop in two days, and I don't know what I'm going to do.. because with the camera and all that USB ****- everything seems lost, but I don't know with this FCR.. there might still be hope for this little toy. Anyway, friday is my uncle coming to my house and he's an ingenior, so he'll take a look at it and hopefully he'll know what the problem is. He can fix anything, normally.

So just to clarify - your installing what software and what is it not doing?
If you'r trying to connect your camera directly to the PC to download pictures, most (OK, maybe just a lot) of people on here will tell you its easier to get a card reader. The USB cable connection to your camera is not a very stable solution. For some it works - for many it doesn't.

i sooo appreciate your help and hope you can help me resolve this. i don't want to have to wipe out my C drive!
i've had various Canon cameras for YEARS...have never had this problem until a month or so ago. I even went out and bought a new camera -- but i still cannot download my pictures (device does not even show when i go into 'my computer') anymore. It was so easy before ... just plugged in cord and it all happened quickly.
I did the auto install of the Canon software "Digital CAmera Solution Disk ver 30.2" .......and apparently it's not detecting my USB
WaltA

There have been many posts about problems using USB to connect Canon cameras to PC's. It seems to me that Canon has made some changes to their Canon Solution disk software lately that is causing compatibility problems with Windows.
I myself have used the USB cable on PowerShot cameras for years and on my XTI as well until I upgraded to Windows Vista last year. Then it would not "see" my camera any more. My PC has built in card readers so i use them now instead of the USB cable.
The stange thing is my PowerShot cameras (A70 and A570IS) both work fine with the USB cable but the XTI doesn't. I just gave up and use the card reader for all of them.
This all may not be of much help fixing your problem but just sharing woes. But I would suggest that formatting your C: drive is probably an extreme move.

Did you put your memory card into the reader?
Make sure there is a card in the reader or else there won't be anything on the reader.
Makre sure the reader is connected. You should see a new Drive in your "My computer" Folder.

My memory card? You mean the one from the camera? I didn't take anything out of the camera - just plugged it into the USB port... when I search on "my computer" the camera device does not show. HOwever, if I plug something else in that slot - it does show...so this is just about the camera - not the port itself.

You might want to start with the store you bought the camera from. They will probably be your first line of support.
The problem is its not "really" a Canon problem but a combination Canon/Windows. As you'll see if you do a search for "Download" or other things like that in this forum, you'll see that the most successful solution to your problem is to spend $29 (or more if you want) and buy a card reader.

Actually, its probably more to do with drivers (the ones that came with the camera and the ones that came with Windows) than it is to do with the camera itself.

You can buy a card reader for about $30 that goes in a USB port on your laptop and the CF card goes into the card reader. Thats the best/fastest way to download your photos to your PC. Doesn't depend on the WIA drivers from Canon.
If you don't have a USB port on your laptop - ,,,,,,,..... hmmm - have to think about that. I don't know offhand of any serial port card readers.
