I saw that Sigma is now releasing a zoom with OS (optical stability).

Are there allready people who shot with it.
It's rather on the high-price for € 1400,00 but if it's good I will probarbly buy it anyway to replace my 135-400 f4.5-5.6.

I would love to shoot handheld with 400mm.
Now I can up 300mm but 400mm is almost impossible except on a very sunny day.

Greetings,
Frank

And in "Rip Off UK" the advert below is from Warehouse Express and they are supposed to be cheap????

.................................................. .......................................

New Arriving Early 2004
Sigma 80-400mm EX APO OS HSM
F4.5-5.6 wt: 1650grms

Available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma

80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX APO OS HSM £999.99
.................................................. .....................................

$999 = £565.831 @ todays exchange rate.

we are being asked for an extra £433 or $764

Anyone thinking of buying one over here could go to the US for a short holiday buy the lens and use it and still have change!!.

LOL - or not, rather.

Actually, I find that Warehouse Express prices vary between cheap and expensive. Sometimes and for some items they are asking the cheapest price, other times (or other items) they are not the cheapest.

That ad is incorrect as well, the 80-400 OS does not have HSM focusing, see Sigmas site.

Many were surprised Sigma did not include a HSM as the Canon 100-400IS USM will be better choice for most, or even the sharp Sigma 50-500 HSM without IS.

Has anyone posted pics/review from the new Sigma OS?

It may be advertised but it isn't available yet. I think the Warehouse Express advert was put on when the lens was first announced and even Sigma had HSM on their website. I have no doubt the price will be changed once Sigma actually ship a lens.

On the subject of 'rip off Britain' - what is not taken into account is the higher salaries here in the UK, and as a percentage the price difference isn't as bad at it first appears. Most Brits couldn't survive on US salaries.

The appearance, specifications, and the like of the product are subject to change for improvement without notice.

RE: HSM... you can look at Sigma's converter table here,.
http://www.sigma-photo.com/html/pages/ConvComptChart.htm

...and you will see that the EX lenses mentioned have HSM listed only on the camera types that supports it. Minolta and Pentax mount versions of the lenses are non HSM as the bodies do not support the built in HSM motors in the lens.

Thus far this lens is Vaporware. I do not know of any existing copies out in the real world. It has been on paper for over a year. (It was announced at photokina in fall 2002)

I think it is a VERY safe bet that when it is fianlly released,. the Canon, Nikon and Sigma mount versions of the lens will definately have an HSM motor or in fact some impreved version of the HSM. (Sigma has a MHSM, no idea what it is)

According to the many friends i have in the US "They" could not survive in the UK taking into account Food prices and of course the UK Liquid Gold (petrol) prices.

Their salaries are way ahead of mine and most people i Know.

but the question is still there how can you have a $764
price difference?

1 - 200 maybe but nearly double..No Way can suppliers over here justify that, they are doing their normal con trick of $1 = £1.

I am interested in this lense, but if or when i get it.
it will probably be from B&H and will include a short weekend in NY to get it. or i will get a friend to buy it when they are due to visit the uk.

i am all for supporting my local dealer, but i refuse to get ripped off to this extent.

Hi,

A bit is the sales tax, in the US everything is priced without the sales tax, for the Netherlands that would be 19%.

The pricing in the Netherlands is for the cheapest place € 1299,00 that would equal arround $ 853,00.

Greetings,
Frank
