I need help! (possibly not a huge surprise to those who know me!)

Am in the process of moving over the digital and the assorted moral dilemmas of which of my own body parts to sell to upgrade camera bodies!
I have been offered a EOS 1d in wonderful condition, albeit with about 30k actuations. Cost is approx £600 (around $1100 i think).

What are people's opinions of purchasing this, against a new 30d?

Budget-wise, I am hesitant, as a first up purchase, to go straight in for a 1d mk2 or mk2n, I would rather spend less than £1000 and then once this camera has paid for itself then go for a top end camera and then use this as a back up. The robust build of the 1d is appealling, as too is the 8fps and it only having a 1.3x magnification factor.

I currently use an EOS 5 and a EOS 3, coupled with a 70-200 2.8L and a sigma 120-300 2.8 (and 1.4tc). I predominantly shoot sport so its a given that AF speed is important to me. Both the EOS 3 and 1D share the same AF system.......is this AF in the EOS 1d considerably better (for shooting sport) than that of the 30d?

However the biggest question is over the image quality. I have researched til I am blue in the face and numb in mouse-clicking finger the 1d and opinions on that and the technical specs etc, however can't really make my mind up whether the 4mp is too much of a payoff in return for the robustness (is that a word?!) and high frame rate! I have seen sample pics from the 1d and the 30d and still struggling to make my mind up.

So, I figure the best thing to do is throw this open to people who have used both....or either of them!

Your thoughts would be very welcome and incredibly helpful!! (and if I am being an idiot, please feel free to tell me!)

Thank you in advance.....

Get the 1D and some nice glass.

As a sports shooter the 1D series is your tool, so for now, sacrifice some megapixels to use the right tool. Once your comfortable, then grab the MkII (or MkIII if it's out soon :) )

This, unless you intednt to print most of your images larger than say 13"x19"

Exactly What CDS said :) The fps and autofocus speed alone make the 1D the easy choice

Brilliant, thank you both for the advice - my gut feeling was the 1d, however just needed someone to confirm that I wasn't missing something!!

Now, where is my bank manager's number.....................:D

A 1D with 30K on the clock for 600 snotters?

If you don't want it put the seller in touch with me !! :D You'd be looking at 8-900 notes at least from one of the major used gear sellers over here.

I am over here! I think!

It was quite an appealling price I have to admit :) - just as well, it means I can plough the rest of the money into spare batteries as its quite a hungry beast by all accounts!!

Have to confess, I have just doubled checked and its 45k not 30k actuations, however given he is a professional and about as obsessed with kit welfare as its possible to be, I am happy to take that on.

Hopefully, by the time it gets to 100k I will have moved onto something newer and shinier!!!

I have been watching a few here in the UK on ebay and they have been going for around £500 upwards, the lowest was £480 which had 10K on it but had a scratch on the screen and a chip (largish) where the strap goes.

GSH - I would love to do the gentlemanly, friendly thing of pointing you in his direction, however, well...........tough!!;)

Have just got in touch and said its a done deal at £600

Between this and the other thread that is kicking around on the forum today you have all put my mind at rest!

So a large thank you!

However am still hoping that in a "tragic" administration error he "accidently" gives me his mk2n instead!

That’s a good deal; 30-45K is not much for a Pro camera.
I say go for it!

Superb News.........ITS ARRIVED!!:D

Not so good news - the guy I bought it from, who admittedly has been brilliant all the way through, forgot to put the charger in!

This is like the ultimate form of torture!!

I wonder if I can connect it up to a solar panel so I can go shooting today!?;)

Anyway, huge, big thanks to everyone who gave advice before though and pointed me in the right direction! Will post some pics.....if I ever get to use it!
