I'm thinking that the digital rebel may be for me. I've got a G3, which I will keep for my carry-all camera, but want one with more megapixels, etc. for studio work.
Any suggestions on a good place to purchase one for a fair price? Perhaps the new year, after Christmas, will be the best time to buy?
Thanks for your help ;)

It will not make a difference if you buy one today (Christmas Eve) or at the biggest blowout sale on the planet on the 26th.
Price will be the same. There are NO bargains out there. There are some unscrupulous dealers out there that make some people THINK they are getting the deal of the century, but all you will get is heartache and some possible credit problems.
Buy from a reputable dealer: B&H, Adorama, Samys, Ritz/Wolf/Kits and there are a few others. If you are not sure, PLEASE come here and ask and this group will guide you in the right direction.
There are some nasty, nasty camera dealers out there just waiting for an innocent, unsuspecting buyer looking for a deal. Be careful.

I got a pretty good deal on mine, though I had to wait forever. Found out that a retail store called K's Merchandise had them, and one day they had a 10 percent off everything so I asked if they had any Digital Rebels. They said they could order one, so I said fine do I also get the 10 percent off and the guy was like I guess so. So I paid the reduced price and asked when I could pick it up. He said in like 4 days. Turns out that once they figured out they lost money on the deal my 4 days turned into 28 days (probably hoping I would cancel). But I finally got it and it works great.!

Virtually no discounting going on for this camera at this time. The few online etailers that show a price below others do not have the product in stock.
Your best bet may be to check some of the retailers that might have a related promotion. I bought my Digital Rebel (300D) at Circuit City which had a $100 gift card rebate in effect for various cameras of $999 or above if ordered online. I ordered, chose nearby store pickup where the camera was in stock, and had it within an hour or ordering. No shipping cost that way either.

thanks for the responses. i know all about those 'nasty' crooklyn dealers since i had a bad experience when purchasing my g3. i checked out saveondig on www.resellerratings.com and all of the (12) reviews were positive. who knows, maybe they wrote and submitted the reviews themselves? i think that they sent me a refurb which had tons of problems. these guys are nefarious!

The 2 places I do business with and trust are B &H Photo and Samys Camera. Samy's is nice if your in the L.A. area because they routinely have no "sales tax" sales. But if your somewhere else, go for B & H. We've spent between 15-18K there and have never had a problem. Shipments are timely (usually earlier than scheduled) and the prices are resonable.

You must have gone to the wrong place. Read this: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller5516.html
Their current rating is ZERO and the first 4 reviews are VERY DISSATISFIED.
You really should listen to us. Several folks here have been there, done that when it comes to bad re/e-tailers. We are giving you good, firm advice. The only other advice I can offer is to follow this advice: Buy from a reputable dealer and forget these fy-by-nighters with their unreal prices. You by from them, you WILL get burned.

Hi and a Merry Christmas to everyone.
I bought my Digital Rebel Kit a month ago at Sears. They offered a 10% discount and I got a two year replacement warranty.
The Speedlite 420EX I bought from the local Ritz Camera shop.
I am very happy with the camera.

I purchased my Digital Rebel at Best Buy.
As a frequent customer, they often send me 10% discount coupons which I used for the sale. Also their Rewards program, offers points for each dollar spent, so I "Earned" almost $50 in certificates to spend, (which I used for my christmas shoping.)
And they offer 18 month interest free financing, so I ended with the camera a lot sooner than if I had to save for it.
The camera is great.
Here is my contribution to Digital Rebel information, which shows the coverage of the viefinder;

Someone else told me that they got theirs at Sears so I went out and bought their last one today. I got a 10 percent discount plus a 10 percent difference the price of Circuit City. CC had it advertised for 10 percent off (on web sales only) which Sears say they will match. But they were all out on their website so I went to our local store and with a little persuasion that gave it to me for the online Circuit City special.
And I went for the warranty too which means if anything goes wrong with my rebel i simply trade it in for a new one, for up to two years from today's date.
Now to open that box and start playing with it. Any newbie suggestions very welcome!
merry christmas to me ;)

Maybe they found out they were bogus reviews. Either way I wouldn't go near that e-tailer.

Reason 1million I deal w/ B&H exclusively. I'd rather pay a few more bucks and have piece of mind. I have blown $2200+ onthe Sigma lens/filters, then $ nearing $2000 on the Canon L lens and other bits and bobs, and nearing another $700 on the Flashtrax drive and battery for it. They get the "they rock!!" from me! There was one small hitch, once and that was the US mail sending overseas to the UK. I was withing a few days of filling lost/stolen paperwork out thru the USPS. Sometimes it takes forever to get stuff here and other times it is literally days! It is weird like that. You know that once you get a SLR, you have to get the lenses and please don't skip on the lenses. Sigma makes some ass kicking lenses in their EX series to go head to head with Canon L glass. That $1900, 5 3/4 lb beast known as the Sigma 120-300mm F2.8EX is one of them!
If the 300D is anything like the 10D (it ought to be as it's a similar sensor, still 6.3MP) it will show the flaws in cheap glass. That's why I sold the 70-300mm Sigma lens I had and the 28-80mm Sigma is collecting dust. I have gotten lucky a few times and got a few decent pics with both of them, but not enough to say so. I went to pro glass and haven't looked back. I am an L-caholic! I have a 35-70 and 75-300 FD zooms in the mean time that work, sorta with an adapter. I really can tell, just by lookng at the pics which lens they were shot with, months later. Mind you I'm sitting at like 2187 total pics taken w/ the 10D I have. I stacked on another 200+ on the trip to Hull and York/Yorkshire, 4 hrs North of where I am in East Anglia.
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays!

B&H prices are not high. They are at market level. Sometimes you get some pretty good deals too. They are consistent. The main thing is that their customer service is excellent. That is worth every penny as you don't have to worry about your order. Did they get it? Will they ship it on time? If I have to return it will there be a hassle?
Adorama and Samys are the same way too, though I have not ordered anything through either site. There are many testimonials on the forums.

I'd like to put a word in for Canoga Camera also (http://www.canogacamera.com). Although I am fortunately able to shop directly at their store I'm sure their mail order is equally as trustworthy. They are very helpful and consistenly have as low, if not THE lowest prices, I've seen.
By the way, I don't know how many of you have ever been there but SAMY's main store is just awesome for photographers. It's huge, four gigantic floors of photography equipment (even open on Sunday's).

I concur with your recommendation of Canoga Camera. The people who work there are cooperaive and well-informed. Prices are okay. For Southern California folks, they're a valuable resource.
I've never been to Samy's main store, buy I have been in their Pasadena location. I happened to pick a day when they were having one of their 'no sales tax' sales, and it was pretty much wall-to-wall people. I hope to go back sometime when it isn't so hectic.

Okay so we have the following trusted, pro-level camera retailers:
B&H
Adorama
Samys
Canoga
With Ritz/Kits/Wolf kinda being on the borderline and really not making it into the top group.
Anyone else we're missing here?

I too will say nothing but GREAT THINGS about Canoga Camera. I got my first lens thru them. They where VERY INFORMATIVE. When I was not satisfied with my Lens, they helped me with the return. GREAT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. Great phone support. I am only saving my money to go to Canoga Camera and get my lens. I live over 1 hour away, and have no PROBLEM driving to there location
