Hi! I'm still new with photography. I have just ordered my Canon 30D and these lenses:
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
I'm am going to New York City to visit in couple weeks, and I like to take some good shots of building, bridges, urban life, etc.
What is a good lens for walking around in the city?
If it is not listed above, can you provide some suggestions for a lens to walk around Manhattan?
I will be carrying a Crumpler "5 million dollar home" bag.
Thanks for the help! :D

On a crop body, I'd absolutely say the 17-40. You'll want a wide angle, and 24mm on a 1.6x just isn't wide.
However, for candids and "urban life", the 70-200L IS is awesome.

I'd take 17-40mm L if my focus was mainly buildings or the 24-105mm IS L if it was more on general street scenes.

40 just ins't long enough to capture alot of the scenes you will see, in reality i think you would need 2 lenses.

absolutly 2 lens for the city. I live here and never leave the house without my 24-70 and 70 - 200 lens.

Take them all...there's so much to see and do in the city, that you may regret not taking what you have. Of course plan on certain places to go, and with that thought in mind, take the lens/lenses that you think would be appropriate for that day. If you have a chance, try to make it out to the 'Cloisters' on the upper west side...and for that, since there's no flash photography allowed, the 50 1.4 would be a great lens to use.
Have fun on your trip!

Get a Think Tank belt, and two or three lens changers. You will definately want to bring at least your two smaller lenses.

Simple.
Get a decent backpack and take everything you have.
Best regards,

If that's the case, yes I would take all of them. Just seemed they didn't want to. All of those in a crumpler or backpack won't be a pain to carry at all.

Whoa, just noticed he's using a 5MDH. That's barely gonna fit the body and a normal lens, no?

Yeah...I am mainly going on vacation with my husband, and the Crumpler 5 MDH doesn't scream "I'm a photographer with a SLR". On the website it claims I can fit two lenses.
I don't mind carry more lenses, but just didn't want my husband to think I'm going overboard and not enjoying the vacation enough. So I decided to perhaps get a couple and fit into a camera bag that looks like a purse.
In the case of carrying more lenses, any recommendation for bags that I won'tn feel that I'm hauling around heavy things...something I can walk around the city without looking to "dorky"...LOL
By the way, Thanks for all the help!

Just empty things into the hotel safe, when not in use. Planning in the city makes a BIG difference, especially if you are vacationing. Take all your gear, and put the stuff in the safe. Once you figure out where you would like to go i.e. central park, battery park, Times Sq., Canal St., Riverside Dr., etc. just pick one of the lenses. Then, all you have to do is walk with a camera, and one lens. Of course, if you don't particularly like that one, for that day, just take a different one. I dunno...just rambling here...but makes sense to me, when I travel.

I can't believe I beat Jon to it....but get a DOMKE bag! They are wonderfully built, hide the fact you have camera equipment with you, and look like a messenger bag/rucksack. Also, they are great to use while actually taking pictures. Backpacks can be a pain to shoot out of, while a shoulder bag (especially domke) is a joy as you can just set it around you (wrap a strap around your leg while doing so if you are worried about theft).
I just got my first domke last week and I'm in love. I got the Domke F-1x which may be a tad bit too big for your needs....I'd recommend the F-2 for your needs.
edit: after looking at your gear you may need something a bit bigger than the f-2 to hold your 70-200 IS. Hopefully Jon will swoop in here soon and tell you exactly which bag would suit your needs best....he's THE domke afficianado. :p

If you take only one, take the 17-40-- for both building/cityscape shots and for 'street' photography. By and large, street work done with telephotos doesn't look as good as similar work done with wide to nomal lenses. If you want to do architechtural detail shots, then go with a longer lens, I suppose.

You know what..I've got a great solution. The Kata H-14. Stylish, yet compact bag, fits a flash (or lens) in one side pocket, a body with up to a 70-200L IS lens in the main compartment, another lens (17-40 would fit) in the other side pocket, and more room yet for batteries and CF's. Comes with a rain/heat shield as well. 'Bout 80 bucks. I love mine. You'd be surprised how small it looks for holding that much. Well..I was, anyway.

The funny things is...actually I was just looking at the Kata H-14! Too bad I wasn't paying attention to my watched eBay Kata-14 and got outbid. Some guy was saying that it's a great bag to carry around for places like Disneyworld where he knows he'll get splashed with water.

Hey, might as well start out right, eh? They've got some of the best Canon has to offer...and to me, that's a hell of a way to start out.

I think in NYC, you will use the 17-40 & 24-105 for the vast majority of your shots, however as many have already noted, take all of your lenses. There is nothing worse than needing a lens that you left at home! I use the Crumpler 7 MDH which carries everything nicely and really isnt very big in size. Have a great trip to NYC!

Yeah...I've been saving up for awhile. I started out back in early 2004 wanting to buy the 10D (stuck around with my s45 and S60 forever). But I never had the guts to spend so much until I know this is what I really want to do, and I want to invest in it.
Thanks for all the tips! :D Looks like I'll be getting a 45-70L f/2.8 from Ronald too, added to the collection. That one I want...not until later though, since eventually I want to evolve to wedding photography.
Yeah I heard some review on the Crumpler 7MDH bag. I heard when you carry from the top, the sides kind of slump down. But it still looks very attractive, like a college student walking-around-campus bag.
Haven't been to NYC since 8th grade. I'm looking forward to it!

Good call Graham. This lens always travels with me. It is just so much wider than the 17-40.

Co' Sign! Hands down. All I do is street photography. And Out of those I could shoot a whole day of people and scense with the 17-40mm.
