View Full Version : Need help to purchase Canon 300mm f/2.8

It looks like I'm getting Canon 300mm 2.8 for a great price but I need to get rid of 2 of my lens to pay for the 300mm. I really don't use the 100-400L that much, so I think that one is going up for sale. Any suggestions on my other lens to sell- I use the 70-200,24-105,17-40 the most (trying not to selling those) Which ones would you sell?
Thanks!

I would go with the 17-40 since you have a 5D and it's full frame....tough call

How much macro do you do? Could get rid of it unless you need it for the speed at standard use. 28-70 or 24-105 If you don't need the speed, get rid of Sigma. If you don't need 70-105 (you have the 85) get rid of 24-105.

The Sigma if you need to sell another. If you really like the Sigma though it might be worth it to have the 2.8 every now and then. It and the 100-400 I guess???

Thanks for the help-runninmann you have a point, I really not using the 100 macro as much as I should. My wife ended up taking the 350D with the sigma. So I can't sell those. That's was the deal, she got that package & I get the 300mm. I think I got the better deal this time

The 1.4XTC goes perfectly with the 300mm 2.8. Keep that.

Around $450.
If you decide to sell it a little cheaper I may be interested... Say $375.00, but you probably cannot take that much of a loss on it. You could probably sell it on eBay for more. LOL! Or trade it in at a local Mom and Pop store.

What lenses do you use least? That should really do it. Dont tell me you use them all equally too ;)

dont, DONT sell the 1.4x. as for which lenses to sell. i think the 100-400 would definitly be the most expendable. really, other than that, sell the lens you dont use the most. but hold onto the 70-200 for sure, pairs up real nice with the 300 2.8. I can tell you that you certainly wont be dissapointed with the 300, its a beautiful lens, produces great images.

It was $3200 - 1 year old but the deal fell threw, man talk about being disapointed.
So I went to B&H and bought a Sigma 300mm f2.8. I should have it by early next week. I have 7 days to return it if I'm not happy with IQ. I was reading at FM forums that it was pretty close to the Canon- I hope so.

just sell the stuff you use the least. if you bearly use a lens, it should be the first on your list. no need to ask people which they think are bad lenses, just go by how much you need something.

I'm waiting to get on a plane to get back to FL. I have been in PA past 4 days. I stopped at the canon service center in NJ Friday to have them clean the dust off the 5d.
Service tech asked me what else I had in my camera bag- I said 3 lenes-24-105, 70-200, & 100-400, so he said well lets clean those too.- Ok, 1 hour later everything like brand new! Very nice people at the service center! All at no charge.
Tommarrow the new 300mm 2.8 will be here & mounted on my clean 5d- Can't wait!
Those pictures are awesome blonde!

Here are a couple of shots with the Sigma 300mm f/2.8- both without any PP
PRO so far-sharp & fast focus CON- No IS & heavy- How do these pictures look to you? I plan on taking the lens to the beach or zoo with tripod or monopod tommarrow. If I'm not happy with results, back it goes & time to save a little more money for the canon version. These were taken in the parking lot 10 min. after I got it. I'm sure I'll get more interesting pictures Thrusday.

I was hoping to get to the beach to take some surfing shots but it rained most of the day. I'm finding out there is a learning curve on this lens that is quite different than any other canon lens that I own. It's taken me a little longer to get the IQ I've seen from the other 300 2.8.Hoping to do better than what I posted today. I'm still not sure about if this is a keeper or not- Friday is D-day- B&H said I had 7 days to return. I'm starting to see better results finally! I wish my budget would have allowed the canon's version but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

By the posts it looks sharp... Is is hand holdable? Yeah, with that much money I would want to be 100% happy with it B4 keeping it. I could have used some super tele glass today. 200mm just is not long enough, but fits my budget... LOL!

It has been taking a little getting use to, the lens weighs 5 lbs! plus body- 85% of shots so far where hand-held. Picture of the 2 guys with cart was with tripod, remote & PP
