Quite impressed with it so far-it works exactly as you'd expect the low end film bodies to work.Abit more complicated though.
Surprised by the file upload speed so far.I'd heard it takes half an hour to empty a 256Mg card but my full 128 (for example)uploaded in 6(?) min.Cool

I'll have to look into why the focus can't lock on something 8 feet away in dim light with BOTH of the focus aid lights flashing.....

I won't be subjecting you guys to any shots yet, they're all pretty average!I've basically been firing away......

Ron--that half an hour cannot be correct. But in any case, you might want to invest in a card reader. $30.00 well spent.

USB2 or Firewire card readers are both fine. USB2 will be easier to find. Uploading from the camera is tedious.

I tried it once. I don't even know where the cable is now. A card reader is the only way to go. BTW, I have a built-in card reader on the front of my PC, but for some reason it won't read my 512meg cards, so I still use the USB 2.0 reader.

Congratulations on the new camera, Ron. Your fun is just beginning.

I couldnt find my reader under the mess I call a desk so I just plugged in the camera. Never again. I will clean off the desk b4 I try to get stuff off the camera again.

Good luck and have fun.

Congrats on the new DR. But I worn you now, I have had mine for approx. a month, and I have already bought a new lens, a tripod, and a second CF Card, and will be getting the 550 EX real soon. For some reason, when you spend $1000 on a camera, $300 doesn't seem like much for a flash.

Not when it's the 550EX. I just got one and it's awesome. ANd I have only just barely started using it.

Kinger, I understand what you are going thru. I bought the Drebel about a month an a half ago. I keep going to my bank account and looking at my balance (on a daily basis) hoping that my money will quadruple over night so I can get my Lenes, Flash units, bigger bag, etc, etc.... I did get a nice Delkin I-Pad from my wife, so I don't have to worry about portable storage when gone for an entire weekend shooting soccer. Nice device and for about the same cost as a 1GB CF. Thank you SANTA. Now I hope tonight, one of the big boxes is my Lens(doubt it) but one can hope. Oh yeah, lottery day today so muct go get a ticket. Happy Holidays to all and be safe

Oops...too late ,LOL
I've allready done some lens tests (blush) No focus or dead pixel tests yet(may never)
In fact i tend to be abit blase' with it,i've been totally forgetting to be carefull when changing lenses and i REFUSE to baby the thing. If it gets a scratch then too bad.Like you say,i'm gonna have fun.

Oh-as for that lens test....I tried the kit zoom against a 50/1.8 (both @f8).I was getting seriously confused when i mixed up the file numbers and thought the better pic was from the zoom.....LOL

LOL.Yeah i've allready overspent slightly.
Buying retail wasn't entirely nessesary. Also i bought a CF card of epay at the same time i ordered the camera. The seller stuffed up the order so i had to get another card when i picked up the camera.
I think that'll do me for the mo,i have loads more lenses than i can use (i deal in used stuff as a hobby) and my bro is getting a big metz flash soon (60 model or somesuch...) so that will come in real handy at the first wedding i attempt.

The booklets included in the kit are funny (read STUPID).Two slightly different versions of everything.
And WHY does the supplied software come in so many parts?? Sure photoslop elements has to be seperate but surely their own software should be made properly from the ground up (one program only)?

Tried to take a pic of my house and surrounding flowering trees this morning...forgot that the 500mm mirror lenses would only show what an 800mm lens would.Couldn't fit anything in! lol
Have a great christmass everyone!

Jim,
Full speed, high speed, USB 1.1 or USB 2.0, that is the question! I think this will explain it all...

From www.usb.org:

Short Q&A:
Q1: How fast is USB?
A1: High speed USB (2.0 -ed) products have a design data rate of 480 Mb/s. Full speed USB (1.1 -ed) devices signal at 12Mb/s, while low speed devices use a 1.5Mb/s subchannel.

Here's the more indepth info from www.usb.org:

Q: How does this compare to other connections used with PCs and workstations?
A: Here's a quick list of the maximum transfer rates for various connections in megabits (Mb) and megabytes (MB) per second:

serial port: 115kbits/s (.115Mbits/s)

standard parallel port: 115kBYTES/s (.115MBYTES/s)
Original USB: 12Mbits/s (1.5MBYTES/s)
ECP/EPP parallel port: 3MBYTES/s
IDE: 3.3-16.7MBYTES/s
SCSI-1: 5MBYTES/s
SCSI-2 (Fast SCSI, Fast Narrow SCSI): 10MBYTES/s
Fast Wide SCSI (Wide SCSI): 20MBYTES/s
Ultra SCSI (SCSI-3, Fast-20, Ultra Narrow): 20MBYTES/s
UltraIDE: 33MBYTES/s
Wide Ultra SCSI (Fast Wide 20): 40MBYTES/s
Ultra2 SCSI: 40MBYTES/s
IEEE-1394: 100-400Mbits/s (12.5--50MBYTES/s)
Hi-Speed USB: 480Mbits/s (AKA: USB 2.0 -ed)
Wide Ultra2 SCSI: 80MBYTES/s
Ultra3 SCSI: 80MBYTES/s
Wide Ultra3 SCSI: 160MBYTES/s
FC-AL Fiber Channel: 100-400MBYTES/s

The fastest connection commonly found on PCs is UltraIDE, which is used for hard drives and CD-ROMs.

Note SATA (Serial ATA) is missing!!!

:) Just like anything else, don't overdo it. Experimenting is expected. That's how we learn. Just don't become obsessed with it. You'll grow hair on your palms, go blind and all that other stuff! (Sorry, HAD to say that).
