I'm not one to remember locations very well but I took a short trip to Ithaca, NY recently and shot one of the waterfalls in the area (Rebel XT, 28-135). I'm new to this, so I'd welcome all comments about all aspects of this shot

Excellent shot from the gorge trail. Welcome to the forum. And indeed it is Taughannock Falls...in the Town of Ulysses.

Thanks for the welcome Woolburr,

...and for verifying the location.

It sounds like you're way more familiar with the area than myself. I was down there doing some hiking with a few members of my family and just lost track of all the different parks and falls in the region. The whole Finger Lakes area seems phenomenally picturesque.

If you liked this...take a day and go to Watkins Glen State Park. Possibly one of the most scenic hikes in the country...if you like waterfalls. The gorge is especially phemoninal when the leaves are changing. Other great waterfall ops in the area are Fillmore Glen State Park in Moravia, Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca, Robert Treman State Park in Ithaca... and Letchworth State Park near Castile, NY....about 35-40 miles south of Rochester....(this park is often called the Grand Canyon of the East). If you like waterfalls...the Finger Lakes is the place to go!

PS...spent 28+ years protecting the good citizens of NY...so I do know a bit about the state.;)

Dan, is that an old quarry? The carvings in the rock wall do NOT look natural.

Seems an odd place to dig with a waterfall flowing through it.

Nice shot, at first I thought the light and shadow were at odds, but I think you got away with it.

Thanks for the comments everyone, it's always nice to get such positive feedback.

The Ithaca leg of this road trip was absolutely splendid. As Dan mentioned it's a remarkable place. Me and my wife like hiking a fair bit and this is the first time we visited this part of the United States (we live in Canada but I'm English and she's Portuguese). I have no doubt we'll return.

Anyway, I'll drop some more shots taken in the Montreal and Quebec City part of the trip. I hope you'll enjoy them equally well.

Cheers,

Brhum

It is all natural. The receding glacier caused some most interesting scars on the landscape. To the right of the falls as you look at it is an almost square looking section cut out of the rock. While it looks as if it might be man made...it is totally natural. In fact, a hiker trespassing beyond the safety barriers was killed when that particular section broke away. This gorge is constantly evolving, and there are several rock slides and falls every year. Hence, the safety zone near the base of the falls...people are always ignoring it and every year there are fatalities and serious injuries as a result.
