Hello there...
I own a Canon 20D and I was looking at the 30D right now... The first thing I saw that is different was the LCD monitor and that it has more resolution in the LCD monitor...
If you are an owner of a 20D... would you sell it to get the 30D?...

No, I haven't seen any indication that it's enough of an improvment to make it worth my while to sell the 20D and buy one. Besides, my 20D is very very well used and probably wouldn't sell for much.

I'm holding out for a 1 series camera. For now, I'm just going to keep my 20D and shoot it until it dies.

Depends. Do any of these things interest you?
-Spot Meter
-1/3rd step ISO setting
-2.5" LCD
-ever so slightly improved AF (probably unnoticable)

For all the reasons that KevC mentioned and the fact that I got a really nice
price for my 20D after 18 monts and 30,000 shots, for me it was a no brainer.
If you want to sell your 20D then now it's the time and you get a good price.
If you wait longer you loose more. I lost only about 200 € after 18 monts use.
For me I love the big LCD, now I can see the menu's with my old eyes ... ;).
And the spotmetering I've allways wanted it. About the better focus: I have
the feeling that it's a bit better but I can't say it for shure. Somtimes it's just
a feeling and some results with the 24-105 are better and some sharper, for
my eyes. But like I said, it's more a feeling then a real fact.
Good luck.

The 1/3 ISO and spot metering would be what would make me upgrade should I ever but I can't see that happening - much more likely is that I'll move up to a body like the 5D or 1DmkIIN and use the 20D as a backup. The improvements are incremental for the most part between the 30D and the 20D compared to, say, the 10D->20D.
Having said that, if I could somehow sell my 20D and buy a 30D for only $100 more than the price I sold the 20D for I'd definitely upgrade. I somehow doubt the difference would be this little though ;) AU$400? Heck no. I could buy a lens for that price. An 85mm 1.8 would benefit my photography more than an extra metering mode and more incremental ISO.

Of course i will sell mine in a heartbeat, only if i am offered the price of a new 30D.:D
In reality, it's not happening. So no. Why waste the extra money when you can use it to fund a nice lens? ;)

Nope, keeping my 20D (but I don't have much of a need to upgrade it anyway).

I wouldn't sell a 20D at a loss either. I have a 30D because I was coming from an XT..and THAT is a real upgrade.

I had my 20D stolen a couple of weeks ago. I am not back at uni yet so my uncle let me borrow his 30D so that I could take photos in my last week of holiday. There are some things I prefer and some things I dont like at all. the LCD falls in both of these categories. Like - bigger so good for on the spot chimpin. Dislike - gets very messy as it takes up so much of the back of the camera it is a cheek magnet. Like the 1/3rd stop ISO bit havent found the Spot meter to be much different from Partial

Nope. The minor improvements just don't swing the deal for me.
And lately with the price of a used 20D dropping like a rock it widens the upgrade cost gap even further.
Next body I get is going to be a 1D, I just have to convince myself that giving up the onboard flash is worth it.

My son had my 10D and I wanted to convert it to IR so I took that back from him, gave him my 20D and bought the 30D. That was the only reasoning.
If I was sitting with a 20D and looking at the 30D, there just isn't enough there to buy it based on advanced technology.
Spot metering is probably the best change made in the 30D but you really can work around this if you read light to any degree.
The 1/3 ISO settings are nice but not mandatory.
I know allot of people put allot of emphasis on the larger LCD. For the way I shoot this doesn't make any difference. The only thing that this gets used for beyond menu changes is reviewing the histogram after some shots. I learned a long time ago not to trust the LCD image as an indication of how the image will look. You can't tell sharpness (unless it is horribly out of focus), color balance is non-determinable and exposure is better handled by viewing the lcd.
The AF system is touted to being better but in reality I didn't notice any great difference between the 20D and the 30D. It may be there, I'm not disputing that, it is just not that noticeable to me. I even did some quasi Sheldon-scientific tests with both bodies side by side shooting with the same lens at the same scene and couldn't tell the difference.
Now that Photokina is over and there are many people disappointed that there isn't something to upgrade to you have to think, what is it that I don't like about the 20D or is it that I just want to upgrade. I've done the "I just want to upgrade for no good reason" so I find nothing wrong with that. I think it is fair to assume that there will be a new body come the PMA in the spring. If Canon is true to their traditional timelines they will have a upgrade in the 1 series and something for the 5D. The 30D will have only been out for a year and they traditionally do it every 18 months. So if you are looking towards a 30D replacement you may have to wait until this time next year. This assumes that Canon stays true to their traditional marketing agenda.
The 20D is still a great camera. I know several pros that use it regularly and have them as backups to their 1 series bodies. I know some feel that it a better step to move from the 20D to the XTi but they are blinded by the megapixel marketing blitz. Don't get caught up in that. The difference between the two is only a couple of MP and unless you are making incredibly large prints the difference is negligible.
If you want to upgrade in any event, I would wait until mid to late October when Canon traditionally brings in some sort of rebate program. Good luck.

You think I'm joking?
Too many times I've been saved by the pop-up flash on my 20D after my wife decided to raid my camera bag for AA batteries.

I have thought about getting a 30D, as I am looking at a second body, my 20D would then be my backup, but at the end of the day, I think I would be better off just getting another 20D and saving the $$$!

Its really a no win situation.
If I put them somewhere else to prevent the theft I invariably forget them when its time to grab the gear.
If I leave them in the bag there is only a small chance they will actually be there when I need them.

LOL... I hear ya.
Still, it's your fault for letting her know the thing took AA batteries. Get some rechargables for the flash and some for the kids toys (and her toys ;)) and you'll be set... maybe :D

Thats all I've got is rechargables.
Last count I have purchased in the neighborhood of 60 NiMH AA batteries.
Three kids makes for alot of battery operated toys.

Jungie, the first thing you mention (so I assume this is your biggest reason to upgrade) is the LCD screen. Well, I have both cameras. When I was looking at a second body I was undecided between the 30D and 20D. I don't spot meter and don't use 1/3 ISO increments, so the LCD screen was the only reason I upgraded. I thought it would be better to check focus accuracy on.
well, I was disappointed. No matter how sharp your photo is, it looks blurry on the large LCD screen. I actually find it easier to check focus on the small 20D screen. I asked around why this is and apparently the preview images are just thumbnails, but the thumbnail size is the same between the 20D and 30D. So yes, the screen is bigger but you gain no resolution in the thumbnail image so really I wasted my money and I was annoyed. :(
That being said, the zoom function when previewing a photo is much faster on the 30D.

I sold my 20d 14 moths ago to buy a 1 series,2 weeks ago I got a 30d for my wife and realy don't think there is enogh in it to justify the upgrade, same as I don't think it is worth upgrading to the mk2N from the mk2.:D

No way I'd dump my 20D for a 30D unless it broke down. I'll wait a while for a 10MP 40D type, with dust removal....and even then probably wouldn't upgrade - I'm super happy with the 20D.
To be honest if i had the cash I'd go 1D IIN.

Yes both cameras support EF and EF-S mount lenses.

If money was no object or they were the same price, I would get the 30D everytime.
If money was an issue and as in reality there is a price difference, you need to see if you really need to few extra features it has over the 20D, I would not be prepared to spend too much more on one over a 20D.

The "improvements" on the 30D weren't sufficient to get me to move away from the 20D.
If I were looking to move up from, say, a 300D or an XT, I'd look at the 30D. But already owning a 20D , it just wasn't tempting enough...

Much agreed with Steve P. I sold my 20D not too long ago, and was thinking about which to get. Since I don't shoot more 'sports' type activities, I figured the 5D would be the better choice...and it's what I will end up with, in the near future.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless there is something wrong with your camera, then I would suggest just keeping it as a backup, in case you do decide to go FullFrame, as the 5D is...and you won't be able to use your EF-s lenses with a 5D.
Moral of the story, don't buy any more EF-s lenses, unless you plan on going to a APS-c type sensor camera (i.e. 20d, 30d, XTi, etc.). Just buy regular EF lenses, if you plan on going to a 5D...or other full frame camera (i.e. 1Mk2Ds).
Good luck.

The question is "what is your 20D not doing now that you want it to do?".
If you need another 4MP and a full frame sensor, then yes you should look at the 5D, otherwise just spend your money on glass.
No matter how hard I try I cannot justify upgrading from my 20D to a 5D or a 1 series, 8MP is pleanty for the work I do (have got enlargements up to 12x18 with that), I have no need for a full frame camera (that one I find really hard to justify unless I was doing a lot of wide angle work), 5fps is fine (in fact the 5D is actually slower at 3fps), if pushed I could perhaps say I need a larger frame buffer when shooting in RAW but that is about it.

I have both. I still use the 20D as much as the 30D. I doubt I would sell for the upgrade...but...the larger screen is VERY nice.
