Got my macro lens today :D First off, this thing is alot bigger than the 100 macro, its bigger than the 200 F/2.8L as well. There is going to be a steep learning curve here, but I am up for the challenge. Here are the first shots with the 180L. My wife's wedding ring, let me know what you think, now that I look at them, I should have centered them a little better

lol if only they were not covered in dust and looking rather dessicated i would pick them over their live kin anyday lol.

BTW, do you use the 180L with the mt24ex? If so are you able to handhold it without shake>? Im finding much lower success than i had with my mpe, i know this is all to be expected, but i was just curious if anyone else had a similar problem.

thanks.

I think Dante and calicokat should be banned to come to this forum, they tempting all members to get all canon gears.
I will not come here later in the future so i don't want to temp others.
Congrats on that super macro lens, Need shots.

And blowing the dust off just tears their wings off  I do not have the mt24ex, I have been experimenting with two 580ex's so far. I will let you know how this goes ;)

I am still young, and you are young as well, but Dante is old i think.
When i will be old enough the first thing i will think to do is to buy CANON manufacturer.

So far, its tough. I was thinking of the ring light eventually. Any one have experience with the 14 ringlight

I've heard it's very good, but i've also heard that it can be a little flat, lol note the ambiguity there, i've seen alot of great pics with it.

Calicokat,

Outstanding glass both the lens and the subject matter :) That lens is tack sharp!

I bought the EF 100 MACRO and I used it to document my wife's jewerly collection for insurance purposes. What a great excuse to buy a new lens :)

i honestly couldn't say, i've never used the ring light. I can give the twin a good endorsement though, i wish the flash duration could be shorter though as with the 180 i can still get camera shake when the flash is the sole illumination.

With the working distance of the 180 I'd suggest the MT-24EX macro twin-lite over the ring-lite. It's more powerful and more versatile.

You'll need to get the Macrolite Adapter 72C to make either of the macrolites fit the 180.

Macro is an amazing world!

Remember that you can also use TCs with the 180L - to further increase working distance. Extension tubes increase magnification, and the life-size converter does both.

i think usual problems with any equipment withstanding the twinflash is very good, it offers a good amount of control over lighting as far as position, ratio of A+B bulbs etc.

there is calicokat, a most involved section of photography. This is why i love digital so much, i can't imagine how i use to get by on film lol I was so worried when i sold my mamiya rz kit, only because to be honest i lost alot of money, but i have more than made up for it now offsetting the cost of buying film and film developers plus the time it takes to scan the negs, which is a friken age lol

I would recommend the twin over the ring. Not only do you have more control with the ring the larger seperation give a less flat apearance that the ring, also the ring tends to give ring highlights that are distracting. Finally double the guide number of the twin is probably the most important thing for use with the longer WD of the 180.

Thats what I am leaning towards, the twin light, thanks for the advice and info ;)
