Greetings and Merry Christmas to all. Now for the purpose of this thread: I am soooo close to making the plunge/upgrade from a G3 (which I am satisfied with) to the EOS Rebel. My wish list at B & H is ready, I just need a little help justifying the expendature to myself.
1. Are there any functions on the G3 that I will miss on the Rebel (metering)?
2. Are the overall optics better (for the extra money)?
3. Is the auto focusing better(really important)?
4. Will I be head over heals in love with the Rebel compared to the G3.
5. Last but not least, what would be a "fair" price to ask for the G3 which is 6 months old and in very good condition?
In advance thank you for any help.

First, Merry christmas to you also :D
The optics depend entirely on which lens you choose to use, but even the kit lens will be better.
AF will be *much* better
WIll you be head over heels, well, probably :)

I upgraded from a G3 to the Rebel a month ago.
The flip out LCD is the only thing I miss once in a while.

Whether you will miss them or not depends on if you have ever used them. The G3 allows you to pick the focusing point by moving it anywhere on the screen. Personally, I think the 7 points on the Drebel are good enough, but the G3 does have the additional capability there.
2. Are the overall optics better (for the extra money)?
Obviously, the ability to choose your optics is a huge bonus, but there are some really cheap lenses in the EF range as well as the 'L' lenses. I think the G3 lens is acceptable.
3. Is the auto focusing better(really important)?
Drebel wins for speed here.

I have them both, and I love them both. The G3 is always in the car, and I can grab it anytime.
5. Last but not least, what would be a "fair" price to ask for the G3 which is 6 months old and in very good condition?
I have seen it new for $450, so $350-$400 seems fair.

I upgraded from a G3 in early October. I posted my thoughts HERE (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19216).
I am very pleased with the DRebel and have no regrets of getting it. I do miss the portability of the G3 at times, and I do miss the movie mode from time to time with the kids and their antics. I really should get a video camera or I'm thinking of getting an A70 as a 'carry everywhere' camera and taking video clips with that. 3 minutes of video is a long time.
Oh yes, I sold my G3 with a 128MB card, two Lensmates and a small case for $400.

i have the g3 and just got the rebel. i plan on keeping and using both cameras, one for mostly fun and the other more for serious work. the g3 is fun and the flip out screen has allowed me to do some things that i otherwise could not do. i cannot comment on any differences just yet, but i think that i may really miss not having an lcd to look through in composing my photos?

I don't have a Drebel but I have a D60 and a 10D. Go ahead and make the plunge. But you might want to keep the G3, I just picked one up recently for portability. I found that in certain situations that a DSLR might be too bulky. But at any rate....enjoy.
