This experiment was for fun only-i'm not trying to say there's any significant use in trying this!So please take in that context......
I haven't developed the film yet but i can tell you what i saw through the viewfinder.
The way i did it was to completely remove the rear mount of the 18-55 and replace it with another eos mount that (allmost) fits.A 28- 105 mount comes close to lining up-i got enough screws in to test it anyway.
At 18mm it vignets strongly (no surprise at all) which doesn't complately disapear until about 24(?)mm.I focused, locked up the mirror on the rebel G (with a small lump of blue tack)and took some pics both at 18mm and about at where i thought the vignetting would be bearable (22'ish).
After repeatedly measuring everything i concluded i could safely take shots at about 22-23mm(?) without mirror lock up.I tried it and it worked fine-nothing touched(on this camera......they all have different amounts of clearance!)
A few thoughts...
Sure it could be modified to fit a film camera and could be used at it's widest setting for fun (with the mirror locked up!!)But it's not very usefull
The same could be done to use it only as wide as the camera can safely handle (22mm?) without MLU...*********BUT********..it's only a cheap lens and there's allready a lens that fills that exact role-the 22-55 cheapo zoom.
It could have the back bumper cut off and be used as a cheap "28-90" zoom on a 10D (the guy in korea has allready done this with no problems (?)...I think i read about that on this very forum)
The 10D mirror is apparently small enought to miss the lens elements at the wide setting.
I'll post the film examples when they are done
