Wear what a guest would wear. You don't want to upstage anyone in the bridal party, but you don't want to look out of place either. I hate wearing button down shirts too, but just go find a comfortable, loose white or off-white one and some comfortable dark pants and you're set. You don't need to be uncomfortable, but you must dress appropriately.
Of course if it's a casual wedding you have much more lattitude (but still, please, no jeans and no t-shirts). It's 6-8 hours of being uncomfortable in exchange for potential future work. Trust me, I feel your pain. :)

I give the bride a little "questionaire" to fill out along with the contract. There is a spot for them to check the package they want and fill in location information and a space for the bride to check a box for the type of attire we should wear: formal, semi-formal, and casual are the options. It's helpful for us and for the bride.

Yeah... you have to present yourself as a professional. I HATE wearing dress clothes, but I do for weddings. Once I start taking pictures, I forget all about what I am wearing.

I always wear a button down shirt... even if it's short sleeved. And I never wear jeans unless the couple specifically tells me everyone there will be wearing jeans and shorts. When it's hot I wear a linen short sleeved dress shirt. It is very cool and comfy.
I was in a wedding party a month ago and the photographer wore a tight tank top. I thought that was TOO informal. She was quite a looker and was the type you'd WANT to see in such small attire but still... I kept shaking my head the whole time.
