Has anyone looked at Scott Kelby's new book, "Photoshop Book for digital Photographers CS"? My question is, if you have both the PS 7 and the PS CS, is there any real difference between the old and the new book? I hate to spend the bucks, if there is really no difference between the two. I have the book for PS 7 and it is worth its' weight in gold. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

I also have the one for PS7 and looked at the new one for CS while at the bookstore last week. There are a few new things in the CS edition but, to me, not enough to justify spending the $40 again. Instead I purchased Scott Kely's other new book "Photoshop CS Down and Dirty Tricks" (also around $40) most of which contained new material.
For those who don't have either I would highly recommend the Scott Kelby books especially the "Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers" (unless like Bill and I you already have the PS7 version or are already a PS guru).

I've just ordered the CS Edition as I didn't have the PS7 version but I'm not going to order the 'Down and Dirty' CS version as I own the PS7 one.
By all accounts the Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers is damn good!
Cheers,

I have both books, and the differences aren't significant, however, there are some differences between 7.1 and CS beyond just buit-in RAW conversion. To me, it's well worth $36.00 ($40.00 - $4.00 Barnes and Noble Reader's Club 10% discount)

Tom--can you summarize out of the 11 (or so) chapters, how many are new. After a quick thumbing at the bookstore it looked to me like there was a lot of duplication but I didn't go in-depth like you can. Is there a lot of info on their RAW interface?

I'm heading out the door in about two minutes, so I don't have time to give you the answer you're looking for right now. I will do it later today if nobody else has.
Thanks for your patience.

I have both of those Kelby's books and they're awesome. Another good book is Mastering the Digital Image (PS7 based) by Barry Haynes and Wendy Crumpler. It was a class book for the digital photo class my wife took at our local college. I' have found it quite useful in learning PS.

Ijust recently recieved the CS version and it is well worth it for RAW conversions but other than that it's not to far off from the PS7 edition. I purchased mine though Buy.com

I ordered Scott's PS7 book from Amazon for $24 and free shipping.
If you have another $7, order Avondalemedia.com's DVD on Photoshop. It is loaded with informative info. No matter how much you've used PS, you'l learn things that will really help you.
It sells for $50 but look for the Special price.

I did a quick comparison of the two books' tables of content, and find that the chapter titles are the same. A number of the sections within those chapters have been either substituted or renamed, however.
The new book is 16 pages longer, and most (but not all) of the graphics are the same or similar. As before, all the screen captures are Macintosh.
The initial impression is that the new book is just a re-hash of the old one. I don't think that's a reasonable assessment, though. The new book has definitely been updated to include the new features in CS, and a lot of the old material has been updated.
I think it’s worth spending your $$ on as long as you’re using CS.

Okay, I trust you but don't forget I have the PS7 version so I guess your saying those updates, the camera raw stuff and those extra 16 pages are worth $35. That's 2 bucks per page! :-), oh well.

I'd just as soon you find a copy, look it over, and then decide for yourself. For me, it was worth it. For you, maybe not. I don't want you to come gunning for me if you base your decision on my recommendation and decide you don't like it. :)
Any major bookstore is going to have it.
Good luck.

I know, I thumbed through it at the bookstore last week, I was tempted except I noticed all of the screenshots were similar and I thought to myself "what a rip, he should of at least added some new stuff" but what the heck...I'll take another peek at Borders tomorrow.

Okay Tom I went to the bookstore and bought it....now I'm gunnin' fer ya. No just kidding, there was enough in there to justify the cost considering Borders was having a 40% off special today...it only cost me about $20.

I had the version 7 checked out from the library only for a short time, I liked it so much I dicided to buy a copy and just happened to get the CS version (actually had to wait a month before it was available). Scott is a great writer, fun to read. I think the CS version is well worth the extra money IMO. I've been going through some of it since I got it and he does touch on the new CS features quite a bit. I just got done reading the first two chapters and of course you'll see allot of difference there because those are dedicated to the file browser which has a lot of new features.
As far as the content changes, I must have a bad memory, because I don't reconize any of these samples from the old version 7. I know the sharping sectioin and color corection sections sure look different....but like I said, I didn't spend alot of time with the older version. The CS version is by far the best PhotoShop book I've found to date.

Only if you plan on upgrading to CS, I have both and the section on RAW has been a great help but CS is the only software I use for editing. If you do'nt shoot RAW or if you use Capture One I don't think its really worth the investment for now.

40% off? WOW I never get 40% off at the bookstore. Was this a one-day special on certain books?

I'm not sure, it was at Borders bookstore and there were no signs outside advertising it. I just noticed on my receipt it said "40% off special sale". I said "thank you" to the clerk and quickly walked out of there.
