ok, seeing as how the front element seems to be recessed, would a hood be necessary with this lens? should i just dump the 20 bucks for the adapter and hood from amazon?

I bought the hood. I'm pretty much a hood freak because I don't like filters (except for CPL and ND). The hood buys me protection of the front element. Oh, and it blocks out sunlight sometimes. :-)

you can also get one of those 52mm screw-on lens hoods from any camera store. Looks a little weird, but it does the job. It's actually rubber, so it absorbs inpact even better :)

A hood is not necessary on this lens, but if you have to have one get a generic rubber hood with a 52mm thread, as cmM advised.
The lens is so flimsy that bashing it is a bad idea period. I cannnot imagine how a hood will save the day with any serious impact. I like filters to aid in keeping the front element of a lens clean. But I don't expect them to protect in any other way.

I dont use hoods for protection, i buy them to reduce flaring, but the front element is already recessed, is flaring an issue ever?

I was photographing last friday, at night. Testing: 17-85 IS, 17-40 L, and 70-200 L (f/4). All had a lot of flare... But all had hoods. 17-85 and 17-40 had filters... but 70-200 didn't, but it did flare a lot... Very suspicious. At least, I think a hood would be a good buy. I have it, and it makes the lens so nice a funny. :-P

I got a hood with mine when I bought it from Hauff. Not sure if it actually does anything or not but it certainly makes it look less whimpy. So if it works or not, I use it anyways. Also bought me a cheap Canon UV filter for this lens because the lens is so hard to clean that it make sense.
The hood is the old fashioned typed hoods from Canon, not a fit but rather it latches on like a docked starship.
