If a couple puts their engagement photo that you took in the paper for an engagement announcement do you expect them to give you photo credit? Does it matter to you whether or not they give you credit?

Thanks!

if it's a paid client, I wouldn't necessarely make photo credit an expectations. Same way you don't put your name/logo on prints.

Definitely, if I sell (or give) a client a print that doesn't give them a right to publish it, but I'd be happy with limited publication with a credit - which becomes free publicity.

I can't see at all how it's the same as (copyright) marking your prints for customers. The print is THEIRS reproduction rights of images are MINE. We don't put our logo on prints but nor do we give them the prints and say 'just go ahead and make as many copies as you like'.

Where would they get the image from? Just make it clear that images are licensed for personal use, and public showing of the photos requires credit. If a couple came to me asking to show the image, i'd prepare it with my name down one edge of the image, without making it stand out too much. If they didn't ask permission first I wouldn't make a big deal out of it.

I've never seen a photographer get credit for an engagement or wedding announcement photo for the newspaper. Most photographers I know of will provide 1 print specifically to be used for that purpose with their wedding/engagement photo session package prices.

Must be a cultural thing because in the UK it's often the photographer that submits the pics. Local papers are often full of pics of recent weddings with them grouped by studio.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I wasn't too worried about it, but I just wanted to see what other people did. Thanks!

it might be different in other parts of the U.S. too...here the B&G submit it and have to pay to have it shown. I don't think it was always like that.

Yes, photo credit should be considered. In our paper they have the engagement photo or the wedding pic in te newspaper, then they print "Photo By: ***** ********" next to it, its just common courtesy

Over here it's either the couple or photographer sending a wedding photo to the newspaper (we don't have engagement announcements, only wedding ones). The couple pay to have it in the paper & sometimes there's a credit, sometimes not. Guess it depends if the couple/studio put it in.
