Okay, I bought myself a Flash Card Reader and guess what? It doesn't work.

I tried plugging it into both USB ports.
XP does detect it, because when I plug it in, a message comes in which says "New Hardware Found: USB CF".

Then I get on the

-----------------------------------
"Welcome To The New Found Hardware Wizard",

This wizard helps you install software for:
USB CF

If your hardware came with an installation CD, insert it now. ***

What do you want the wizard to do?
-Install software automatically (Recommended)
-Install from a list or a specific location (Advanced)
-----------------------------------------

No matter which one I choose, I always get on a menu saying;
"Cannot install this software. The hardware was not installed because the wizard can not find the necessary software."

**** When I put the CD (which was included in the flash card reader package) into the CD Rom Drive, a menu appears. On that menu, I click on "Install Software Driver", and the installation runs perfectly. When the installation is completed, it says "Setup has finished copying files to your computer. Before you can use the programs, you'll have to restart your computer."

So then that's what I do.. I restart my computer. When my computer is restarted, I see that the CD installed something on my :C drive, called "Media Reader" and another thing called "Format Shell", when I try opening the Format Shell application, I get the following "Could not find any valid device for formatting. Please make sure that you have connected the proper digital media device in the USB port (or) the media is NOT present in the device."

In the folder of "Media Reader", there isn't even an EXE application .

But didn't you guys say that if I plugged it in the USB port, I should automatically get a list of pics that were on the memory card or something? That doesn't happen. When I plug it in, I just get the "New Hardware Found" message again.... please help me guys, because I really don't know what to do anymore!

What kind of a reader did you get. Is it one of those multi-card card readers? If so, then you'll need to install the driver software that came with it. I have a lexar multi-card reader and, although XP recognizes the reader when I plug it in, it won't read my CF cards unless I install the Lexar driver software first.

Without the software, XP only see one reader. With the software, it see four, one for each type of card format that the reader supports.

Nope, it's not a multi-card card reader.

Just a single-card card reader..

It's okay now, never mind.

Just some virusses that were preventing the software to install.

Glad to hear you finally got this resolved. But now, I wonder if I should go have myself vacinated against your virus...or do you think it's to late? :D
