Hello...

Quick question.. I'm going to a wedding today and will be taking pictures as a guest.. Would you all recommend me getting/using the 50MM 1.8 for regular picture taking or should I stick with the kit lens? It will be indoors.. obvi.. and actually, is it possible to take a picture with this without flash? I don't want to be that guy but I'm also a noob. Thanks!..

I got this lens for indoor shooting

You'll get some good shots with it :)

Thanks MD!! were you very close though? Technically, how far do you have to be to get a good shots or is this a cropping job?

There is little or no cropping on these pics.

But yes i was stood on the alter so maybe if your not that close you might not get the same results.

yeah.. I will probably not stand that close since I don't want to get in the way of the actual photographer and I also don't want to be THAT guy.. :-)
I have a 75-300mm IS but that really isn't practical... and the kit lens.. well.. its a kit lense..

for the rest of my photographs of the wedding i used my canon 35-80 which was a kit lens with my film cam.

So you might get away with it.

All the pics are on www.photoboxgallery.com/naicphotography if you want to have a look.

But all the inside church ones were with the 50mm :)

Yes its a great portrait lens as well so has many uses. Id use MF though rather than AF as its a little slow :) and searches forever sometimes then u have missed the shot!

The 50 f/1.8 lens will do the job in lower light settings, but if possible stop it down a bit as sometimes they are pretty soft wide open (I know mine is). Here's an example of the lens at f/1.8 (the shot with the mothers of the B&G) and at f/5 (the empty platform) Both are uncropped taken from about eight rows from the front of the church and no flash in a low light room (ISO 1600)
