I just purchased a 10D and had hoped to use my old Vivitar 636AF flash from my old and reliable EOS 630. The 636AF is a A-TTL flash which every site says "will not" work with the 10D. When I try it, it fires the IR range strobe and triggers as expected but does so at full power (my test subject is still walking into walls). The pictures, of course, come out completely over exposed.

Anyone tried such a combination or have any insight?

Thanks.

Your 10D's primary flash mode is E-TTL, so you'll get best results with any flash that does E-TTL mode.

If your flash has manual or Auto modes both of those will work just fine with the 10D. Unfortunately, canon gutted the A-TTL system from all their new cameras which has raised the ire of many a working photog, myself included.
