550EX purchased right before Christmas. We don't have kids so we don't indulge in the gift giving. We just buy cool stuff about this timeof year. We also got an Audi TT in October, so I guess that qualifies too.

Well, my wife who detests my photography hobby, went all out.
In my stocking she gave me, are you ready, two (2) 64mg cf cards. She said the nice lady at Wal-Mart said I could take a "Whole bunch of pictures". Well I didn't have the heart to tell her about the two 512mb's I have.
She said she also thought of getting me smaller camera so I could carry it in my pocket instead of that big ole clumsy 10D in the camera bag. But backed off because the "cute little camera" cost almost $150.00 and she didn't want to spend too much money of camera equipment.
If she only knew.
Happy New Year Everyone.

Nothing....at least my wife and I didn't exchange presents in the traditional sense. Don't worry, though; we were both very good to ourselves over the last couple months---jewelry for her and camera equipment for me. Besides, we have an anniversary coming up in less than a month, and that's when we really like to do something special for each other.
Actually, I ordered a 70-200 f/2.8L IS from Dell back in September. Supposedly, I'm still on the list and should have it in January sometime. But my wife agreed that because of the uncertainty of the status of the order, I should go ahead and buy one at the going price, and then sell the Dell lens when (and if) it arrives. Needless to say, I didn't give her a chance to change her mind, so I have that lens now. I still haven't decided for sure whether or not I'm going to sell the second one when it arrives. It's been such an 'educational experience,' I might just keep it as a trophy for perseverance.
Let's call that my Christmas present, although I have my eye on a used 50mm f/1.0 that’s been sitting on the shelf at the local camera store for the last couple months. I have no use for it, but that’s one cool looking lens. :)

My wife and my kids would have no idea of what I wanted or need for my photography hobby so gift certificates to various stores will let me get a few things to help out.
However ... not a gift to me but in a way even better than something to me.
Back on Thanksgiving day my sister in law asked for a photo to use in a frame she wanted to give to her daughter. Having many photos printed up, she couldn't decide so I told her to take them home and make up her mind.
With all my wifes family over on Christmas day and gifts being exchanged my sister in law had taken most of the photos, matted and framed them (2, 3 or 4 to a frame) and given them out as gifts to different relatives. (mostly 4x6 and a few 5x7 prints)
As I said, these were not for me but I was very pleasently surprised to see how nice they looked in the frames.
But, the biggest kick was a 20x30 shot I had printed just to see how it would come out. Being pretty pleased with it I had framed it in a cheap plastic frame and was hanging it on the living room wall as a joke (my wife said it didn't go with the wallpaper)
http://members.cox.net/johnori/g263427n.jpg
As I was hanging the photo a few days before Christmas my mother in law came in and 'confiscated' the photo, frame and all. She said it would look nice on my sister in laws wall. My sister in law was flabbergasted to say the least and loved the photo ... her room is set up with an ocean theme.
Gotta say, I get more enjoyment out of getting compliments on something I've done than getting some toys that I probably didn't want or would have gotten for myself ... it was a very nice Christmas!

Well i just received my EF 24-70 (3 hrs ago!!) to go with 10D and big ED and 70-200/2.8 and 17-40 and 550 EX and Sekonic L-508 !!! Hell i love my equipment .... i jumped in the deep end August 2002 and am trying (and slowly succeeding ) to make a living off it. I did a job in December that "handles" the cost of everything i have. Photography is good therapy !

I got myself a 550EX, a 50mm 2.8 macro lens and a light box to be used with the macro lens for digitizing slides and negatives. Also got myself a 19" lcd monitor to supplement my 19" CRT to make working with Photoshop a little more convenient.
And, oh yeah, I also bought a Digitial Rebel from B&H Photo which arrived a week before Christmas. Nice "little" camera...I was so excited opening the box and holding it in my hand and taking a couple of test shots. But, alas, it was but a momentary bliss as I had actually bought the DRebel for my brother as a birthday present (his bday was a week before Xmas). I drove nearly 600 miles from Pennsylvania to Florida to hand-deliver it to him at a surprise birthday party I also threw for him.

Ummm, how about doing your brother a favor and letting me borrow your 70-200L lens and the Epson 2200 printer. I promise to return it as soon as I'm done. Honest! :)

My lovely wife very wisely ordered one of the items on my Christmas list, and gave me a 70-200-f2.8L zoom. Of course I thanked her profusely, then explained that the addition of this lens exceeds the capacity of my camera bag, and is a bit wobbly on my old digital cam Slik tripod.
Soooo, I ordered a new Tamrac 759 photo backpack, and a Manfrotto 3021PRO tripod, and while I was loading my cart at B&H, a 1.4xII TC kinda fell in there too . . . .
Christmas just keeps on going and going, and . . . of course now I'm hooked on "L" glass, so the future looks risky . . . might have to sell the motorcycles . . . maybe the pontoon boat and fly-fishing gear too . . .

Mr. Dell brought me a laptop earlier in the month, but it wasn't exactly a Christmas present. :)
Anyway, congratulations. You were apparently persistant since I'm sure that Michael Dell wasn't quite prepared to make the deal that his company had agreed to make.

Oh! I almost forgot. I got another gift from my sister in Japan. She sent me 4 rolls of Kodak color film because she knows I'm really into photography.
That was so funny when I opened up the package. It just occurred to me that she doesn't know that I'm shooting digital now-a-days.
Oh, well, I'll just have to keep the four rolls of Kodak film in the fridge along with the left over rolls from my Fuji film packs. :)

'Film' is what you find on the teeth of people with poor personal hygene. It is not a photographic term.
A 'roll of film' is simply a very bad case.

Film? That's what you get on your TV screen after about a month or so. All that crappy dust and dirt and stuff. Film.
LOL
Actually, my wife just got 50 rolls of film and 25 disposable cameras from work. They were cleaning house and offered this to all employees.
I have no idea what to do with all this...

Wife bought me a new Wacom tablet. That's going to take some time getting used to, after years of tracing things with the mouse....
Her parents got me a nice National Geographic "Digital Photographers Handbook" It's the thought that counts, right?? Or are they trying to tell me something?

Send film to me, I have a friend who still shoots film because he is hanging on to the dream that Minolta is going to come out with a digital SLR for under a 1000 that will save all his lenses and be better than a 10D... I will give it to him, to last until hell freezes over....

Minolta allready had a DSLR waaaay back when cameras were 2.0 megapixles for like $6,000.00
Actually Minolta used to make 2 DSLR's, the RD175 that had 3 sensors based on one of their 35mm SLR's, and one based upon their APS SLR, the RD3000 and it was
derived from Vectis 1.
They (Minolta), Fuji, and Kodak were the only ones making DSLR's back then, but no one was buying them really so they stopped making them.
Pentax just came out with one.. so Minolta could too I suppose.

Actually, the Pentax *ist D (I call it "splat-ist - Dee" ) is probably pretty competitive with the DigiReb, but costs 1.5 times as much. I'm not going to knock it, as its probably decent (and got good reviews in at least one publication). Pentax is reputable. But it is priced above its value, though I'm glad to see them competing if for no other reason than to provide incentive for Canon to stay at the front of the innovation curve.

I received a DRebel for Christmas with the 18-55 kit lens. I got it early, but still, I am enjoying it, and plan to beyond the holidays. I have been out of the photo hobby for many years, but things are coming back to me. My first digital camera was a P&S and took nice pix, but was pretty boring. The SLR factor is back in my life, with digital now, and I'm using F stops and shutter speed to be creative and the excitment of photography is returning. I thank my lovely wife for this gift, and she needs to know, I'm not ignoring her, I'm enjoying her gift.
Thanks Babe.

The 12-24 arrived from japan yesterday, i don't have any nice samples to post, but for the few pics i could take from my window it's a really really nice lens
here's a quick shot from my window
