View Full Version : One Upsmanship: King Dante: Bow Down
MDJAK
1st of October 2006 (Sun), 20:29
Well, our good friend and colleague King Dante saw fit to trade the premier 35 millimeter in the world for two lesser cameras. Guess he subscribes to the old adage: Two is Better than One.
So, it got me thinking. Could I let him get away with that? No way could I.
So, what'd I do?
I'll tell ya. I traded the world's premier 35 millimeter dinosaur, as King Dante likes to call it, for a new Phase One 45mp medium format back. Yep, the Plus Model too. I'm having it retrofitted as we speak to a brand new titanium bodied Digital Rebel. I'm having the viewfinder bored out to medium format size. The focus system is being replaced with a 98 point system. It will have one degree spot focusing.
An integral vertical grip, which his USED 5D lacks, is being machined by Paulie of Orange County Choppers of the Speed Channel, out of pure Nickel.
The winder will be built by Colt and will fire as fast as a Thompson submachinegun.
So, there, King. Oh, I almost forgot built in IS, right in the body, and it comes with the new 200 f1.0 as a kicker to sweeten the deal.
What have you got to say about that trade, oh, King of Burgers?:) :) :)

You may get some vignetting with most of your existing lenses with that back ;)
MDJAK

What? Are you sure?
Damn, I'll just have to trade those in too.
If trading or selling off lenses and cameras is good enough for the King, it's good enough for me too.

Me? Angry? You mean because he reports all these great deals after the fact? Never. I ain't got an angry bone in my body.
Jealous? "Cause he just got an 8.5 fps camera with a larger LCD? And the 5D which may, and I say may, have better noise control at high ISO than my dinosaur?
No way. How could you even suggest such a thing? You must be nuts.

Oh, Carzee, you've just got it all wrong.
You see, we're supposed to be one big happy family around here. Most people around here won't even, excuse my french, fart without asking advice,
But, no, not the King. He just plows right ahead, dumps the finest zooms made for what? A measly 300 f2.8 that I've been lusting after for years?
And without asking us for our guidance. The nerve of him; the gall, the chutzpah. (Those are yiddish words, btw.)
And if that's not bad enough, he's got the utter temerity to make a monumental trade, again without asking our sage wisdom be put forth to help him in his obvious time of need.
We may have been able to have gotten him a better deal? We could have gotten Ronald to throw in seventeen 24-70's to sweeten the pot.
But no, Dante doesn't need our help when it comes to equipment trades. None of us get to bid on his trades. We're just a bunch of peons as far as he's concerned.
Well, I for one will not stand for it. I'm going to stand in the corner of my room and hold my breath until I turn RED.   ;) ;) ;) :p
DANTE, I HATE YOU.

Mark, I think you're suffering for post traumatic stress...the solution...buy a burger joint and become the self assured forum funny guy...then you'll just automatically forget to ask serious advice (or give it ;) )....and who knows what gear you'll end up with in a year. it was that early morning i posted about a week ago. we were stalking that reddish heron, and went back in the mangroves to get a bit further down the coast the way he was headed without scaring him off. the trail got a bit more slippery that expected and the poor man pracitcally did a split (i didnt see it, i was a bit further back photographing). lol whats doubly funny is he had moved on when i got there, and i saw he footprints so i kept merrily on going and almost fell myself.

YOU ALL HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY
have you ever thought of giving some of it away? Buying goats for poor people in Africa, providing water to those with none, giving me a 30D, 100-400L and 24-70 2.8, helping support HIV charities, aiding earthquake and flood victims.
If you all do every single one of the things in that list then you will be better people.

...YOU ALL HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY
So, that was you behind the teller's cage counting my money the other day. I thought there was a few hundred grand missing when you were done.
..have you ever thought of giving some of it away? Buying goats for poor people in Africa, providing water to those with none?
We're really not deep thinkers around here. If it ain't got a red ring around it, we ain't really interested in it. Is there such a thing as L goats? If so, I'm interested.
...giving me a 30D, 100-400L and 24-70 2.8, helping support HIV charities, aiding earthquake and flood victims.
Now, that's a real non sequitur. We're going from helping AIDS victims and earthquake victims, to GIVING you camera equipment. Because you deserve it, right?
..If you all do every single one of the things in that list then you will be better people.
From what I can gather, we're all just fine people already.:D

Well my socialist friend, I do that. I am a major financial supporter of a cancer research foundation, local school benefactor (10% of sales goes to them), support and buy only from sustainable local farmers and ranchers, One of the only CERTIFIED green businesses in our area, Recycle our waste oil into biodeisel.... AND THE LIST GOES ON!!!
SO by your terms I am a flippin saint! :):) I have been blessed. I share my wealth. I dont share my gear!!
OH, I forgot. I was a flood victim last year. Not only did I rebuild my business and keep every employee on the payroll, even for the time we were closed, I helped others rebuild their lives and business too! I guess what I am trying to say is........ PISS OFF!!!

Yes, I'm far away on the Other End of the World. Didn't stop Cat's 1D from finding its way to me though. ;)
I bought a 20D quite a while back (beginning of this year) from B&H, condition 9. Surprisingly good condition, little bit of dust in the Vf and a fair bit on the sensor (but this is a camera, not a lens), well taken care of. Didn't have the 'minty fresh' feel that a condition 10 or brand new would give you, but it was good. I would rate Cat's 1D a 9+, almost-minty-fresh ;)
