Is anyone using this comination successfuly? I used this flash for years on a Pentax film setup but when I mounted it on my D30 (after checking the votage on a digital meter) and did all of the manäl settings according to the calculator on the flash all of my shots were blown out. Is there some way that I am missing to set up the D30 to use this flash? Is it even usable at all?

Pretty much no. The Canon EOS line of cameras supports ETTL. There are some choices out there: Canon, Sunpak, Metz, Sigma. Most people select the Canon 420EX or 550EX, but the others are fine flashes too.

But we're talking a $30 flash vs. $150 at least. Especially since I already have a 285 it seems silly not to try.
