Ok, maybe I should not ask this here, but has anyone ever been to Tokyo Japan? If so, what areas should I visit? Should I take my DREBEL or my G1? Help anyone

If you get to visit Japan for only a short time, you are *required* to get a shot of Mount Fuji. Although it is possible to see a tiny bit of it from parts of Tokyo, it is much better to ride the train west until you are in the foothills of the mountain. If you get too close, like to Fuji-Yoshida, then you can't really get a good perspective on the mountain.

In winter, forget about hiking the mountain. In summer, it's fine. The photos from afar are good in winter since it will be covered in snow.

Been there, done that.

Besides all of the standard Tokyo sights to see, make sure that you visit Akihabara. That is the electronics store area of the city. Of course, when I was first there, they were showing the first four-function calculators.

The emperor's palace is photogenic (trees, water, castles).

If you get north into the countryside, visit Chuzeniko.

Oh, and it is required to get at least one photo of a bullet train.

Take both. You will find times when one or both will come in handy. DRebel with a 28-105 or 28-135 IS if you are taking only one.

Personally, I like the city of Kamakura, which is about one hour southwest of Tokyo by train. Kamakura is, like Kyoto, one of Japan's old capitol. You can see lots of temples and shrines.

As you may know, streets in Japan are very crowded, and there a lots of tall buildings, so you probably want to bring wide lenses rather than teles.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

I am going on business trip for about 10 days. Carrying my DREBEL would be fine, except that I don't know how SECURE the place will be where I will be working at. So I am leaning towards the G1, unless I can find a way to lock up my DREBEL in my suitcase and not get it stolen. Shipyard is where I will be at in Nagasaki for the 10 days and then I will have Friday-Sunday for myself. That is when I will be going to Tokyo, or mayby Kyoto, for tourism. Heck, figured since the company is paying for my trip, might as well sight see

Visit a grocery store and see how much Japanese beef and fruits cost. Without pictures, people won't believe the prices.

I visited Shibuya in the spring and the price of one cantaloupe was 10,000 yen, or about $80. Wagyu, Japanese domestic beef, was up to 5000 yen per 100 gram, or more than 20,000 yen per pound.

Due to mad cow disease recently found in the US, Japanese put an import ban on the US beef, which will further raise the price of beef in Japan. That is a sight to see!

I've been to Japan a few times. If you only have a few days to yourself, I would recommend Kyoto over Tokyo by a margin of about 100 to 1! Although a bit oversimplified, Tokyo is concrete with a little "old Japan" while Kyoto is old Japan with a little concrete, and it's also in a superb setting surrounded by hills gardens parks etc - the subway and bus system is easy to figure out once you get hold of the free weekly publication in English which has the week's activities, subway and bus maps etc.
Good luck

I second what AJSJones said! Lots of real picture ops in Kyoto, dare I say! Too bad one can't capture their "funny" Japanese accent in pictures. :)
