Virtual exhibitions are much like normal exhibitions, but you never upload any photos to them. By setting up various selections you make virtual exhibition gather photos into it. The parameters offered are (items in selections are database-specific):

114299

Notable differences are:
- virtual exhibitions do not have author's order (yet).
- virtual exhibitions read thumbs from first matching exhibition, not from specified path
- virtual exhibitions can contain photos from several exhibitions, which means user permissions need more attention from you.
- you can not upload photos to virtual exhibition.

By default EE notifies with red bar on top of editor when Virtual Exhibitions need updating. The system is a little overeager but better that way :)

Hi Pekka,

It sounds interesting. But after reading it a couple of times, I still do not understand what it can do. Any examples?

I was guessing that you could pick a few favorite photos from many Exhibitions into one Virtual exhibition and call it "Favorite of all" without ever re-uploading those chosen photos and their thumbnails, is that correct?

Sean, I have a lot of photos from Yosemite on my website, they are scattered in landscape, wildlife, travel, etc. exhibitions. No single place. With EE2, I was able to create a virtual exhibition that collects all the Yosemite photos in one exhibition.

Example: http://www.melor.com/gallery/list.php?exhibition=40

exhibition 40 is a virtual exhibition. No photos uploaded here, but collected via the page Pekka has above in the first post on this thread.

I don't have any one my site yet.

Virtual Exhibition is something you have to experience first hand, it can not be explained :)

Ok, if you have 134 exhibitions and among those exhibitions you have 367 photos in category "cats" and of those 367 cat photos 89 have keyword "siamese". Create a new virtual exhibition "Siamese" and choose parameters

CATEGORIES: cats
KEYWORDS: siamese FOUND IN keywords

click save and your new exhibition "Siamese" has now 89 photos in it. When you upload new photos later to any of those 134 "real" exhibitions and you give some of them category cats and keyword siamese, they are added to virtual exhibition "Siamese".

For visitors exhibition "Siamese" is just like any other exhibition.

If you want only closeups of siamese, you could add (if you have that lens in your database and used it)

LENS: Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro USM

and now exhibition "Siamese" will have photos which are in category "cats", contain keyword "siamese" and are taken with macro lens.

Virtual exhibition collects your photos into itself, using criteria you define. I can't say any clearer than that.

I was guessing that you could pick a few favorite photos from many Exhibitions into one Virtual exhibition and call it "Favorite of all" without ever re-uploading those chosen photos and their thumbnails, is that correct?

Yes.

Thanks Paul and Pekka for your explanation. I think I understand now. It's a very useful feature.

My future wish list is the ability to select photos from different exhibitions directly and add them into virtual exhibition...

Sean, you can. Check the next to last panel. There is where you add your photos even if they don't meet the other criteria. It's easier, however, to tag them with something that will include them in the exhibition.

Hi Pekka,

I am just setting up some virtual exhibitions and I want to choose photos by ID (no keywords on them). However, it is a real pain to look up the photo IDs one at a time.

SUGGESTION: Can you make the "Additional Photos" textbox into a selector containing photo IDs and titles with multiple selections possible? This would make it much more convenient than entering the photo IDs manually.

Is it also possible to create "virtual exhibitions" not only with complete directories/exhibitions but with selected, individual photos of different exhibitions (e.g. my favorites)?

Best,
J.

You could always create a photo category called "Favourite" and tag any photos that you want included in your Favourites Exhibition

For eaxmple - I've created a category called "Trains & Trams" and I tag any tram or train photos with that. They then automatically appear in my "Trains & Trams" virtual gallery, irrespective of which exhibition/gallery they originally appear in, so I can have San Fran cable cars, German ICE trains, and Manx horse trams all appearing in the same virtual gallery
