That is actually interesting. I can see where it would be useful on a very bright sunny day or a rainy day for that matter. :)

Just curious as to why you would consider a combination flash reflector/rain or sun shield such a weird item. They are used on location shoots all the time. Seems like a pretty good idea to me to combine functions.

i've seen this sort of thing used in video/movie productions. quite common in that arena, but it seems to make a bit more sense there, heavy equipment just sitting on a tripod baking in the sun (never seen someone take a chance on their gear withsort of thing in the rain). But it seems a bit much for most still photo aplications. I could see a strong case for a few... but not many.

If I felt the need for one, I would buy one. Seems like a good solution for shooting in the rain. What else would you propose?

I'll be adding this to my Christmas list. I thought it was kinda cool before I even realized it was lined with reflective silver. That's awesome! i just wish it didn't have the writing on it.

In Britain? It's the windiest place I've ever been. Umbrellas last for only a short while before the wind turns them inside out. The days when you get rain without wind are very few and far between.

Yes, but the umbrella makes an inexpensive mode of transportation...

I think the reflector would be kinda nice... I guess...

I once saw someone taking pictures with a P&S that had a friend holding an umbrella over her so she could see the viewfinder.

Wouldn't a Tesco bag be better in wet weather and a handkerchief better in hot weather?

Add some elastic bands and you're all set.

I used Tesco bags exclusively for carrying my notes to and from from university when I did my degree.

I'd have to go with those that think it is a good idea.

Having a reflector for bouncing your flash off has got to make it worthwhile to start with, aside any protection it may or may not offer your equipment.

Consider:-

Set up camera on tripod close to bird table/nuts etc. Use long remote release. As I can't justify a ring flash a bounced flash has got to work better than direct flash. Also, considering you would have to leave the camera set up for a period of time the protection from rain/sun shouldn't be discounted.

Also, bounced flash for macro shots. or in large buildings where you don't have the use of an assistant to hold a reflector.

I do agree about the wind issue though. Also, I wouldn't want to rely on just the umbrella in inclement weather, so the Tesco carrier bag must also be deployed - I find Velcro ties more convenient than elastic bands though. ;)

That would never work in Iowa. We only get horizontal rain, never vertical.
