I've never charged before and skills are maybe average. A friend wants me to shoot his and his wides motorcycles so he can send photos to all biker magazines to see if he can get in any.
We will be shooting at his place in a barn and outside.
Since Im not a pro, I thought I would just charge for a set of cartriges ($110.66 shipped) for my R1800 and cost to rent a couple lenses ($148.00 shipped) (50mm f1.4 - 24-70 f2.8) and 1.4 extender for a week.
Total $250.00
I will print him 3-8x10's 6-4x6's and give him a cd or dvd with images.

Does this sound fair? I get to use lenses for a week and a set of cartriges and the experience of trying to shoot a pro setup.

What I'm not sure about is copyright and ownership of images?
And quality of images he needs to send to magazine?
As far as if anything gets printed I am happy with my name as photographer and a mention of my url.
Let me know what you think.
TIA,

To be honest, when shooting for a friend and there is no real commercial value involved, if both of you think it is fair then it is.

He is a friend, but he wants to pay for the photos. He has asked my serveral times.
Ok if he wasnt a friend and this was my first shoot where I charge, what would be a standard fee?

I wouldn't charge him 100+ bucks for a set of cartridges. You aren't going to use up all the ink printing 9 pictures, right? Plus, unless you have a photo lab in your house, I doubt the quality would be worth $110.00... Charge for the glass rental and have him pay for the photo processing fromn www.mpix.com (http://www.mpix.com) or one of the dozen other print labs... After that, whatever you want to tack on for your time is up to what you both think is fair.

If you are giving him all the images plus prints, I think $250 is generous on your end regardless of how you actually calculated it out. Are you giving him edited shots on the DVD? If so, that's a bunch of screen time.

At a minimum two hours to shoot, two hours to tweak and edit, the aforementioned prints and the DVD is, IMNSHO a steal on his end. I charge by the digital image, not the session.

I told him pay for the rental and Ill cover the rest. Just wondering what the charge should be for prints?

Are you going to do the printing? Usually mags want files, emailed or on CD rather than actual prints. I would not print for him unless he wanted it. Give him a CD of processed images and let him get prints if he wants them - or print one up and give it to him as you're his friend.
