I thought I would post this question here since this is likely where I will find the most photographers that actually see a lot of your stuff in print. I also have a similar forum rinning in the post processing section.

When a snap shot is taken, the camera has a pre-set size it is taken in.
I hear cannon is 2x3...? Right?

Math not being my forté, that should be the same ratio as 4x6, no? So when I take and unedited image and print it in 4x6 , there should be no edges cut off ....However if I take an unedited image and load it in PS and try to use the crop tool at 4x6 to measure it, i extend the box out and it is not the same size! I don't know what size this is.? I am so confused. I have these beautiful pictures that can't be sized to a standard print size without cutting something off or distorting.....I have some closeups that are not a standard size it seems.

What do you do to get the right print?

Take all the images and crop them to the size you want printed? What if this means a lousy crop. What if someone wants a photo in size 8x10 that was taken in 2x3. It just doesn't work. I am so confused.

DSLR's are 2:3 ratio ... not sure about S2.

Just looked at S3's aspect ratio. Images have 3:4 ratio, not 2:3 ... that's your answer ;-)

These print nicely as 6x8's. There are probably some other sizes that local printing places will do too (can't remember them right now)...

Just crop it....I have to constantly remind myself to compose for a possible 8x10 print on every shot I take...it's a pain for sure.

Really the best thing to do is crop before you send it to the printer...that way you choose instead of the computer.

I only compose for 8x10s for more formal shots. My lab can print any size, so I can make a 10x6.7 or whatever at 2:3 ratio if I want to.

Just to confirm ... by composing for 8x10 you mean allowing an extra 10% on both the left and the right?

You basically ignore the long end of the frame, left/right or top/bottom depends on which way you're holding the camera :p
